Northwest Ohio - looking for a commuter bike

Hello everyone.

I have enjoyed cycling, just as a side hobby for a few years now. I have a Gary Fisher hybrid bike I got three years ago (don't remember the exact model name). It's a nice bike which I ride mainly on the road.

I am in college now though and did not want it to get damaged on campus/in the weather (living in the dorms my first year). So I'm looking for an inexpensive, lightweight commuter bike that I can ride around campus and also around town. Older is good...willing to do some work on it if need be.

My local bike shop (CycleWerks) doesn't usually sell parts, so I am looking for something used. I did come across a Spalding men's 27" frame though today on Craigslist. The seller is about 2 hours away and is asking $60 for the bike. I haven't contacted him yet but will be calling him this weekend.

What are people's thoughts on this?

Here is the ad listing:

I also want to take it on long rides now and then. But I don't think that would be an issue.

Thanks in advance,
- Sean

Just realized that if the frame is 27", it will be too small for me...I have a 34" inseam.

Could the seller have made a mistake and actually be referring to the (27") tires?

Thank you.

I found a Raleigh Record 10 speed on CR, for $175, but there were no pics. I am waiting on them still. I see now it is also a 27". Ugh.

Do you know where I might be able to find a used road bike? I was actually looking to spend $150 or less if possible.

This would work, I ride a 60CM with 34" inseam.
Go test ride it.

Okay, apparently he has quite a range in bikes. He wants $650 for the Cannondale, so that's not going to happen. He just recently finished fixing up a Bianchi (mint green colour frame, tape, and tires), but I think he will want more for that too.

He sent me a photo of a Univega touring bike...picture didn't show the whole bike though. Is this a good brand? I've not heard of it before. He's asking $100 for it.

10 Wheels seems to be coaching you well. Maybe we should have a thread for riders with 34" inseams. I just picked up a 60" frame. It is a great fit for me. The top tube length can be something to consider as well. The rule of thumb I follow is that when your hands are on the hoods (the plastic/rubber covers on the brakes, brifters) you cant see the front axle. You can adjust the seat position and stem size to dial it in for what is most comfortable for you. I agree that a touring bike is a great place to start.

Yes, 10 wheels has been a big help so far.

I started another thread for suggestions. I wasn't sure whether it should go in the general cycling section or the commuter forum, so I went with the latter.

Where is the for sale board on this forum? And do I have to be a paying member to buy, or is that just to post for sale threads?

Memberships to post Sales items are required. This is not so much a sales site as an info site. Craigslist might be a better option for you for sales.

I'm not looking to sell. I want to buy. Was asking if I had to be paying member to purchase items from other members. I guess not.
