Hello from San Diego
I am a telecommuter and ride a Sentinel Sophomore model, with three drive sprockets, to work and home for lunch, 4 days a week. ~1.25 mile one way
I bought the bike from a co-worker in the early 90s; recently changed the tires to 1.25 x 27 to give it more tread.
I am a very active Boy Scout Leader, am a Scoutmaster, Round Table Commissioner, Training Chair, and regularly train adults to be good Cub Scout Leaders.
I enjoy vegetable gardening, finish woodworking, an working on cars too.
Jim

Welcome aboard
Never been to SoCal myself, but my wife is former Navy and was stationed at San Diego for a time... she keeps going on and on about Del Taco's chili cheese fries.

Welcome! I was born in San Diego in the lates 50's. I grew up in a conservative city in the 60's, 70's and 80's that was plagued by political corruption, car-centric, in many ways hostile to cyclists, and which offered only a serverely deficient bus service to anyone who either preferred not to drive or could not afford to buy a car.
You're lucky to live a town that now boasts one of the finest light rail systems in the United States. Congratulations!
My questions for you: I left town in the 1980's. What kind of cycling infrastructure has been built in the San Diego area since then? What is being planned?

That looks like the one I used to have to climb every night as a teenager on my way home from my job at Sea World. I don't remember its name (Fairmount Ave,? Aldine Dr.?), but it's a road that goes from Mission Valley up to the Talmadge neighborhood, where I lived with my grandparents. It was a real nut buster, even for a young kid.

That bike sounds unique to me, never have seen one with that drive set up. Welcome to BF. I was active in Scouting here in NW Florida, Gulf Coast/Perdido Bay Council in the 90's, served as a DC and helped organize troops here for a bit. Very rewarding work to see boys get a good start. We have a commuting forum you may want to visit for others in your area as well as the regional forums.

Bill, my bike has Tourney AID Cranks and an ACE aluminum handlebar stem (don't know what was original) - the original owner got Aluminum rims and did the mods - (I use the steel rims).
Going to the Vigil Weekend and Lodge Encampment - soon - to work on camp improvements.
I'll check out the commuting forum, Thanks.
