Ice Bike Commuter
Hi!
I am a cradle New Englander whose daddy put her on a steel-framed bike when she was a wee one. My first summer rides were gauged in distance by how many dead possums I could reach before turning around.
I have been car-free for almost 12 years, mostly walking the very short (< 1 mile) commute to work during this time frame. I am now moving out of town and looking at a mandatory 7.5-8 mile bicycle commute. Exciting!
I have been lurking for quite a while and learning a lot. Looking forward to actively interacting.
Be well,
Dagmar

Thanks for the welcome, Juha! I had a lovely, 2-day holiday in Helsinki a few years ago. What a neat city! I visited National Museum, City Museum, Street Museum, Tram Museum, Postal Museum, Stone House, Wood House, and a Villa/Sauna turned art museum. I really enjoyed this small taste of Finland. My December visit gave me wonderful appreciation for the relatively long span of winter sunlight we have here in New England.
I had previously bemoaned our darkness, but you've got us beat!

When it comes to winter darkness, Helsinki has got nothing compared to the Northern latitudes where the sun doesn't technically rise for weeks in a row. I visit the Polar Circle regions a couple of times per year, both in Midsummer and Christmas time. The light (or lack of it) is surreal.

I'd hazard a guess you like museums.

I have not been to the Polar Circle. It seems that it would be very confusing for the body in either winter or summer! Hve you bicycled up there?

No, I haven't cycled much there. When they have the most light (Midsummer) it's also mosquito season. Better to go early in the spring, or late in the autumn. Or in winter. I've done a fair bit of XC skiing there in Feb-March and it's great.
