It's very obvious that you've never driven a car in NYC's rush hour.

The fact of the matter is that bicycle is the fastest way to make trips of even up to 15 or 20 miles across the city. The ONLY close competition is between the bicycle and subway.

"Climbing ridership and 24 hour service". Wow, it really is a failure!

Of course... LCF because you have to living there (or Uber or Yellow Cab, if you call that car-free).

It's not that we have to, but cars are of limited use in NYC's downtown areas.

Even those with cars think hard before using them. First, you have to give up your parking place, then deal with traffic, then hunt around or pay big bucks to park at your destination, only to repeat the process, and hope you can find a spot to park when you get home.

I lived in Manhattan for many years. I had a car which I used mainly to (reverse) commute to my business in the near burbs. I lived by the parking rules because I'd often be parked where it became illegal at 7AM. However, I'd rarely use the car use the car for errands in town because it was too much hassle.

Understood. Been there several times over the years-- taxi from the A/P to hotel and cabs to anywhere else. I wouldn't last a second driving there and if I lived there I would have no use for a car but, I probably wouldn't last a second riding a bike there either.

Been living in NYC for a few decades now; it's not too bad:
Depending on where you live and destination; you'll have a few options.
Bus, subway/metro, ferry boat, yellow cab/Uber, there's always the old standby - walking.
The city has been laying more bike lanes; and bike share system is expanding.

It was all an innocent move on my part; really. First off, that was the only time I rode with that club.
For all I know; 4 elederly gentlemen could have shown up. Secondly, I'm always experimenting with
camera placement. Here's a G rated clip then:

So... you don't live in NYC and you have no idea how more than 20K cyclists can ride there or how millions of motorists drive there... but you know that you could not. Fair enough. What I wonder is the purpose of this thread. Information? Condemnation? Relief? Concern? What?

I think it's about how most folks who live in NYC neither own a car (wiki says 56% of households are car-free) nor ride a bike (I never saw the bike in the Seinfeld show ever come off the wall).

You don't need to worry about New Yorker's, we're tough and resilient. Save your concern for the citizens of Ohio or Philadelphia or Wisconsin who are topping (killing) themselves by the thousands, because they don't even have a crumbling mass transit system as extensive as NYC's, and they haven't worked in a year, and there is no money for even gas, forget insurance or routine maintenance of an automobile.

I wonder how or why you included Philadelphia on this list. It certainly has a decent mass transit system, and may also have higher per capita bicycle use for transit than NYC.

However, I agree that we know how to take care of ourselves in NY, despite the "handicap" of our low car ownership rates.

Heads up. TV dramas don't always depict a realistically balanced set of human activities.
