Remembers all of the naysayers who said the Bike Share program in New York would be a flop? They were WRONG!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seth Solomonow/Nicholas Mosquera, DOT (212) 839-4850
NYC DOT and NYC Bike Share Release Statistical Report Card Of First Month Of Citi Bike Operation: 529,000 Trips, 1.28 Million Miles Traveled
More than 113,000 daily, weekly and annual members have signed up, number of trips accelerates to 200,000 in the last week alone
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and New York City Bike Share today released a statistical report card of Citi Bike’s first month of operation, with riders taking more than a half-million trips since the bike share system launched:
Number of trips (as of 5 p.m. June 26): 528,991, more than the population of Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Sacramento and hundreds of other US cities
Number of trips in the last seven days: 200,823, roughly equivalent to the entire population of Akron, Ohio, or Des Moines, Iowa
Total annual, weekly and daily subscriptions purchased: 113,692, nearly the population of Berkeley, California; 50,000 annual members, equal to the population of Hoboken
Estimated miles traveled to date: 1.28 million, the equivalent of 50 trips around the Earth
Estimated number of calories burned since launch*: 50 million, the equivalent of 91,000 Big Macs or nearly 52,000 entire pints of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream
Average number of rides on each of the 6,000 Citi Bikes: 88
*assumes an average of 40 calories per mile biked
“From skyrocketing sign-ups to an interplanetary number of miles traveled, New Yorkers are showing that when it comes to their enthusiasm for Citi Bikes, the sky’s the limit,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan.

I'm glad it's going well, at least according to the people who wre running it. I hope to also see some good reports from more objective sources over the summer.

I'd consider that pretty solid evidence of the impact of the program.
I read once that the Paris bike share had a number of side effects. For one thing, it had the reputation of being a good place to meet people.
Be interesting to get that kind of vibe from NYC.

I wonder if the cab drivers hate this new system that takes some money out of their pockets. It might have a different effect if it allows them to drive through less cluttered streets. They might like that.

I think they hate seeing more bicycles. Drivers see bikes as clutter. Otherwise, I doubt there's much impact. 30,000 rides in a day may be impressive, but in New York it's a drop in the bucket, and few of those trips would have resulted in a taxi ride without bike share.
