What would you choose?
This man had a choice, 7 hours of walking or 12 days work converting a wrecked car into a motorcycle.

There are a couple holes in the story, IMO, or else the guy just had really poor judgment.

He apparently knew where he was, he was only 20 miles from the nearest village, he had enough water to live on for several days, and he chose to camp out in the desert for 12 days and build a makeshift motorcycle rather than go for a short walk? And he's French? I mean, if the guy was from Houston, yeah, OK, but French, fer crying out loud? I would have starting walking shortly before dawn, and been in the village by noon or so, before it got dangerously hot. I agree with Roody- something isn't quite right here.

Well, he had passed the Morrocan police to get to where he got stranded and was in some kind of restricted zone. That in itself was a questionable judgement.
I wonder how much this speaks to an attachment to cars as well. Though I'm impressed that he could even construct a motorcycle from a disabled 2CV.

So he felt safer staying in one place for 12 days, making all kinds of noise, rather than walking quietly for a few hours? Maybe....

Obviously he did, and I've hiked rugged terrain with gear, figure on 1 to 2 miles an hour average, a 20 mile hike will take more than a few hours. Say if the next person is 10 miles away, between him and the village, what are they going to hear?

Maybe there were too many dangerous wild animals along that route. Maybe he had some type of disability that prevented him from walking that distance. It doesn't say he finished his travels at that next city. Perhaps he needed the motor vehicle to continue his travels. The article linked within this one says he didn't even make it to the next town. The Moroccan police found him and took him to the next town. In the second article there are new photos of him with the motorcycle. Apparently he kept it.

Reading one article, the man felt that he could complete the task from car to motorcycle in three days, but that was an underestimation on his part. As I suspected, there was an ongoing conflict in the area, and being caught on foot in some areas along the way could lead to an even more difficult situation. The irony in this story was the fact that the man being heavily fined for driving an illegally modified vehicle by the Moroccan courts, probably the least they could do for his crossing into a restricted zone.

I think the motorcycle was built because he was expecting to be chased or arrested. Possibly for being in a restricted area, possibly something else illegal.

Or someone who just doesn't like being told that he isn't allowed to do something.

It was considered more of a restricted area than a war zone, and that is what the man probably concluded. "Complacency" is a better choice of wording in this case, rather than "stupid", since building a motorcycle out of a car shows that he was not that.

You can be smart and stupid at the same time. Most of us are to one degree or another.

Again, using the word "stupid" does not fit this man at all, we all take risks to some degree, and this man assessed his risk and took it. I'd say that he's probably a little wiser from his experience, to my knowledge he hasn't repeated it since, so the word "stupid" does not fit.
