Show us, or tell us about, your current car-light or car-free commute route and/or errands routes.
Do you ride the bus or take the train? What is that like where you are? Do you have a nice walk or cycle to/from the bus or train stops?

Do you cycle everywhere?

Do you walk ... rollerblade ... skateboard ... use a scooter ... to get to work, school, or the shops?

How long is your commute? What is the traffic like? The roads? The terrain? The scenery?

What do you like or dislike about your current commute and/or errands routes?

I note this thread has been bumped up a few times since the OP, 6/24/14, the above quote from 6/19/15, and the most recent bump on 12/7/15. I had posted on 6/25/14,

The only downside I can think of is that my job is so time-consuming that I can’t ride as much as I like to….

Yes ... and today, I decided to post elevation profiles of my potential commute route because some here had questions about my potential commute route in the Motivation thread. So rather than continuing the discussion about commute routes there, I decided to move it over here, into the commute route thread.

Plus ... people move, situations change.

Update to my commute/errands route: a shiny new roundabout! It opened about a month ago, after several months of a large fence separating my neighborhood from downtown.

I initially thought that I would hate the roundabout, but it has made my life easier by eliminating the need to wait for traffic while crossing one of the busier streets on my way to and from my house. It is also really, really fun, and just wide enough that I can avoid getting clipped by drivers who fail to yield.

Someone made it a Strava segment, and I of course had to play along. For any of you Stravaholics in LCF, I am currently the QOM of the roundabout.

[Edit: I did not take this photo, and should properly credit it to the La Crosse Tribune.]

Most of the time, I like roundabouts too. There is one near me, however, that is just not good. But now you've got me wondering if there's a segment up there.

Roundabouts are getting more popular here, but still are rare enough that not everybody knows the rules and you hear occasional brakes squeal.

The one nearest me is mostly just through traffic, but is also used by parents dropping off kids at school, who then loop around the roundabout, and go back the way they came, and residents of an apartment complex who use it to access their garage. In fact the cross street is only one block on one side of the roundabout, and only services an apartment complex and a school's teacher's parking lot; and the main reason the roundabout was installed was actually for slowing southbound through traffic, who are coming off a wide fast street and need to be calmed just before they go around a curve and into a narrow school zone.

Because so few southbound cars use it to turn left, northbound drivers assume there will be no conflict and barrel through, and people coming south and turning left have mostly learned to be cautious about not taking their right-of-way for granted. (see illustration)
