Christmas 2014

It's Christmas holiday time ... Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day ...

Tell us how you've managed your Christmas (and other holiday) preparations in a car-free or car-light way. Will you be celebrating Christmas or ringing in the new year by going for a ride? Are you going on a car-free or car-light trip somewhere?

The solstice passed two days ago. That can be all of the winter holidays wrapped up in one day. I celebrate by riding my bike.

Where did you go? How far did you go? Did you ride through the night to celebrate your longest night of the year?

Got pics?

I am riding out of my suburbs tomorrow into a rural area to spend few days with some of my relatives. It's only 23 miles one way so not too bad. Weather forecast looks awful, strong winds and cold rain. I organize myself and pack up everything the night before, so I don't have to waste any time in the morning. Weather has been very weird this year, I remember last year I was riding through an ice storm at exactly this time and this year it's above freezing and raining. Nature is acting up big time.

Well I did most of the Christmas shopping on foot. Bus into town where I work ... and then much dashing about on foot at lunch getting it all together.

My favorite holiday tradition is the Christmas Eve midnight ride. This year it will be just me and my son for a short ride in our part of the city. Some of the past rides have been more elaborate, but a couple I have done alone. The weather has usually been co-operative, bu this year they're calling for warm (40F) temps and rain.

I will be celebrating Christmas at work. I get both the afternoon and the evening shift. Since the buses don't run on Christmas, I'll be riding my bike there and back.

In a very small way, I will be participating in a bit of world history as I clean up popcorn and candy wrappers. The theater that I work at will be showing "The Interview" on Christmas.

And I get to work every day until New Year's Eve. So I'm doing my Xmas celebration a day early. No family nearby. It will be a quiet day.

Like Zedoo, I also celebrated the solstice, with a bike ride home from work right at sunset. It was a beautiful sunset.

Watch out for North Korean terrorists!

I also get to work all the holidays this year. With 12 hour midnight shifts, it's a challenge to get much celebrating done. I'm glad my family is fairly flexible.

For the first time, I ordered most of my gifts online this year so I didn't have to go to the stores much.

Most of my Christmas Shopping was done online

Right now we are getting flood warnings (not that where I live will flood, we are on a ridge). Not sure what is going to happen as far as family get togethers, my children will be in on the 26th. I am working from home, not that much will happen. Mainly just clearing up loose ends and filing paperwork.

As far as cycling, IF it stops raining I will probably ride the 2 miles down the road to the little country church for the late night service tonight.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I wish you a hopeful christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
_Greg Lake
Though I think this verse might be more appropriate...

They said there'll be snow at christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin's birth
_Greg Lake

I am in Newfoundland right now. Weather is all-green so I've been able to ride to visit my mother in the nursing home.
I did drive (spouse's car... long story...) to do Christmas shopping. Long lines of traffic getting into the shopping zone.
One of my sons has just moved into a new apartment, close to bus route as he has no car.
Another son seems to have parked his van somewhere and now professes no desire to own a car. Although he wants me to pick him up this evening.

Hope you lurkers and posters all have a great holiday!!

I'm planning another installment of my Annual Christmas Day Bike Ride.

I used to find holidays really depressing, between my dysfunctional non-gathering family and several years of traveling for work over Christmas. Cycling is more fun, anyhow The streets are usually nice and dead if I hit it at the right time - though I'm kind of disappointed that there's no snow this year.

Personally I don't celebrate Christian holidays, so there's nothing much to be managed. I'll be working for a few hours tomorrow, but from home, since the office closes for a week. I have really been enjoying my evening commute recently, though. I love riding my bike through residential areas and looking at all the pretty lights. I think I'll go for a little ride around the neighborhood now, in fact!

It's been raining For days. It snowed a little on Christmas Eve but then the rain came back and melted it all.

This town is crazy about fireworks, even on Christmas Eve. I guess baby Jesus likes loud noises?

My midnight ride was the shortest one ever. I did see that Mcdonalds drive-thru was still open, so when I got home I sent the kids out in the car to get some food and hot drinks. They said the drive-thru line was very long, so i guess a lot of people had the same idea.

Merry Christmas even if the weather isn't co-operating. At least we didn't have tornadoes like they did down south.

Been out walking already this morning, first time in a long time I haven't heard non-stop traffic on the roads around me. Rain stopped late last night, hoping to see some sunshine soon. Going to my parents house tomorrow, rather than today. So staying at home with the wife and the dog. Good times. Might sneak in a ride this afternoon.

Merry Christmas

Our family Christmas trip, as usual is best described as car-enslaved with an 800 mile one-way drive to The Motor City where the car is King, by way of Toronto, to return tomorrow. This year though, maybe car-indentured might be a better term because we stayed two days in Toronto, totally-car free.

There’s the exciting and interesting environment of cavernous downtown streets, but easy access to pleasant neighborhood cycling…

The rental bikes were very heavy, but well-maintained, and tires properly filled. The three gears were quite suitable for the terrain and soon became pleasant to ride… the bikes are conveniently available, for about $8 for 24 hours… 30 minute single-ride limits, but an extra half hour was only $1.50. I had become accustomed to renting from bike shops when away. But Bike-Share Programs like this are the way to go; so much more convenient and cheaper …

My son was particularly interested to visit the various ethnic neighborhoods for which TO is famous. Though we walked and took the fabulous subway and streetcar system, cycling would be the ideal way to explore. Finally, to show how accepting the city is of cyclists, they have codified special dispensations to cyclists that in Boston are still de facto rather than de jure.

This Christmas morning I drove to my brother’s house intending to borrow his bike to do an hour cycle ride, but it started to rain. Though I brought rain gear on the trip, there was not enough time to turn around and get it. So I did a couple of posts to LCF instead.

Merry Christmas.

This reminded me of one year as a pre-teen when I got a single speed Schwinn bicycle as a present. I enjoyed riding it all around the quiet neighborhood streets in the morning. These days I don't enjoy waking up in the morning if I have a choice. I'm nocturnal now.

I didn't have anybody to shop for this year. So I had no need to haul presents around. Gift cards might be the best type of present for car free people to get for others.

For Christmas I'm in a Ramada Hotel that is a bit rundown. My only plans are to study for a few tests for work and to apply for other jobs just in case this one doesn't work out.

It turned out to be a gorgeous day for a ride - it got up in the high 30s and the sun even peeked out for a bit.

I rode up the bluff in town, which is apparently a popular thing to do on Christmas. I encountered several other cyclists heading up and down. Then, I rode around the amazingly deserted downtown and over to the river for a bit.

Since I took a picture-taking device with me, there are pictures today:

Shuttle van. Hotel to school. School to grocery store. That is all I've done. Snow fell beginning Christmas Eve and lasted off and on through the day. Nothing is open so I have nowhere to go. The next day off is Sunday.

Traffic was quiet today, so my route to work was more fun than usual. It climbs up to a street that runs along the ridge near the river. Once I get up there, there is not as much up and down and up and down as along the other streets, so though it's longer, it's faster.

Work was chaotic. People wanted to see movies, especially "The Interview". I think that all 4 showings sold out. But that's good. The theater was just sold and it had gone down before our company bought it. I think this was really the first day that we did so much business.

The ride home was quiet. Climbing back up the bluffs, only one car passed me. No one honked or yelled the whole way home. Merry Christmas.!
