I did D2R2 last year (only the 100K, which was plenty), and on some of the climbs I was really happy to have a 28-30 low gear. I would have been even happier to have had a 28-32.

There's really no such thing as a sissy gear. One way or another, you have to get the same body and the same bike up the same hill, and the power output determines how fast you accomplish that. What gear you use is just a matter of optimizing the biomechanics of getting that power to the wheels. Gearing can make you more comfortable and/or efficient, but the rest is all you.
