Maybe not appropriate for this section but it's a distance related question. I would like to know why the padding in bike shorts goes so far to the front for men? I have tried several different shorts from different manufacturers and all seem to feel the same other than overall fit (sizes). I'm okay on say a 30-60 mile run but once I cross that 60mi mark I start feeling like I'm all bunched up down there and if the padding didn't go so far as to cover my privates I think there would be more room for movement? Are there any shorts out there that have padding only under your sit bones? Maybe a hybrid that would have the thick padding under you butt and about half way to your privates more of a tri-short type thin padding that is flexible? I have been training for a century and this is one area of comfort I need to address to help me get there along with reducing leg cramps which I have posted about earlier in the week and have a game plan to ease cramping. I thought about trying to remove the padding in the front section of my shorts but they were a bit pricey and I'd hate to ruin them. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks!

More padding is better on the front. Trust me, nobody wants your junk on display.

the problems I have had are mostly related to the padding not going far enough and the edge interfering with my comfort. I have thought that less padding might be better, but never acted on this thought

The last pair of PI shorts I tried had so much padding that I had to lower my saddle to wear them. I've started wearing tri shorts and am happy so far. Thin chamois and compression. My theory is if you have this comfortable leather saddle, why do you need such thick padding. That said, I continued to have bunching problems in the crotch until I swapped from a B17 to a narrower saddle. I'm pretty sure all this varies from rider to rider.

Ignore the "junk on display" comment.
Cycling shorts are designed for comfort; not modesty.
Shorts made for triathletes have a much smaller chamois.

Keep in mind the chamois is there to prevent chaffing and to wick away sweat.

Thanks, I've been wearing bike shorts for some time now so the "junk on display" issue doesn't really bother me too much because I'm hardly ever off of the bike unless I'm at the bike shop or rest area along the trails where everyone is sporting some spandex. I looked at some shorts yesterday and I might give a pair of tri shorts a go? They have a thinner chamois which should help my issue but I wonder how the saddle comfort will be affected? I'll give them a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the replies!

I don't wear padded shorts. I'm ok until about 60 miles then it gets a little uncomfortable. I usually wear baggy mtb shorts, boxers and rest my butt upon my uber comfy Brooks Pro. I'm considering getting a pair of padded shorts as I continue to get closer to my goal of a century....
