I have been doing a lot of riding lately. Sunday was a 3 hour climbing ride with my wife and one of her teammates. The women climb like feathers and I held my own. Tuesday, another climbing ride over the GG bridge and today a climbing ride with my wife around our neighborhood. Our weather has been great with temperatures in the 70s. There is another low key hill climb on Saturday that should be fun.

That Prancercise video scared the crap out of me, on many levels. I guess I must be numb to the twerking thing.

Did the team ride for the first time in forever, and was christened with a new ignominious nickname: "Looking steady today there, Crash!"
Longest ride in a long time: 72 Miles, 3.7K gain, about 4 hours, 235 TSS
I faded a bit at 2:45, and had some (quad) cramping at about 60 miles. Otherwise, all good.

I guess the punishment will be easier training rides, since my zones are going to get lower. Waiting for feedback from the coach.
Meanwhile, yesterday, our coaching group had a group ride with 3 current pros, 2 ex pros, and 8 of us regular folks - we practiced pacelining, moving up through a pack, and sprinting. It was exceptionally useful.

9.5 hours last week mostly SST and high tempo with some threshold. Did a Low Key Hill Climb on Saturday that was around FTP. The course was a 6 mile climb but it featured easier flat sections with very steep climbs. On did an over/under approach and hit the climbs harder than the flatter sections. Sunday, I had a solid hour of high tempo with 30 minutes of threshold.

So as I transition to the once a week group spinning session and basement computrainer workouts, I am wondering if anyone can give me some tips for optimizing IMPROVEMENT from a paltry 21 mph 10k TT time last summer toward something closer to 25 for next summer. Is that an impossible goal? I will give a bit of history for context. I am currently a 66 year old wannabe who is hitting on (at best) @ 2/3 of my cylinders. I have previously posted my cardiac history which includes dropping dead on a tennis court and undergoing a X6 byoass the same night that included 2 failed grafts. I have climbed back into reasonable shape by means of diet and training and am -as most of you or you wouldn't be here- very goal driven. I train very adequately for a person of my age but modestly relative to a competitive athlete. I used to have a good motor -e.g. ran 10.4 100 and 52.5 440 (yards) as a 16 yr old on cinder tracks. Even as a 40 year old, could click off 7 minute miles for 5 miles. I have "collateralized" pretty good around the 2 failed grafts per my cardio doc (who is also the guy who saved my life with world class cpr during the aforementioned tennis match arrest). I would classify my training over the last few years as "casual" but regular. So, with all that being said, I am looking for suggestions as to what anyone thinks the necessary training volume, complimentary resistance training and training modes -e.g. intervals vs. hours in the saddle- are for the improvement I am dreaming about.

@madoneboy I never know how to respond to, "I have this or that affliction and I am old what can I expect to accomplish as an athlete based on back in the day metrics and what should I do?" I am clueless and I suspect so are your docs (about your athletic ability).
If you had a myocardial infarction, then some of your heart muscle died and the heart underwent some remodeling. That means you lost some of your aerobic capability. If your death and resurrection was not an MI but a result of blockage that is now fixed, then your heart is probably okay. Of course the docs will know its "level" of okay.
If you have been released for any and all athletic activity then my advice is keep your health matters confidential and focus us on your goals as an athlete are and NOT how old you are or sick you are. If you are old and sick, then I have no advice other than consult with your doc.
If you have recovered from your heart condition and want to train and race as a cyclist, A'jet had some good thoughts.
I suggest hiring a coach as well and get a program going. And let the age thing go. We are all old with problems of some kind. Focusing on that is counterproductive. As older athletes, we have to work harder and be smarter with recovery and taking care our body. For now, ride as much as you can on the trainer and outside weather permitting. I like to listen to music on the trainer and get a great playlist. Also, I like more complicated interval routines to focus on when on the trainer so that I am not just riding at a constant power for X time. A group setting for a trainer workout is always better than being alone.

I am still wrestling with equipment issues -partly centered around wheels- and wonder what many of you have done re training with power and/or racing with power. That is, how many power meters do you have? If crank based, one for the road bike, one for the TT bike; if wheel hub based, how many wheels -or do you train and race on the same rear setup? If you have one power meter, which bike?T hanks!

Until my accident a month ago, I was using one wheelset with a Powertap for my training and racing on three different bikes, and will be back to that situation when my new Powertap rear wheel is finished for my other bike (it's good to have more than one bike). Plans currently call for another PT wheel to be built when I get my replacement bike. I don't currently have a TT bike and am selling another bike, so each of my remaining bikes will have a dedicated PT wheelset. The stars may align enough for me to get a TT bike, in which case my TT bike and training bike would share a PT wheelset.

I have a Stages powermeter that I can switch between my road bike and TT bike; takes about as long for me to swap wheelsets as it does the crank arm.
Some say the Stages isn't as accurate or won't give you the same number that other power meters will give you.
I'm not buying into the accuracy bit, for my intended use, but will buy into the 'not the same numbers other PM's will give you'. I don't care if the wattage number isn't equal, it's my number that I can train to and as long as it's consistent then it's good enough for this old man.
With the Stages I can choose any wheel set I want; disc on the TT, lightweight on the road or a dedicated bomb proof training wheel.
Never leave home without the powermeter.
