I was in a big hurry to join my 1.2 w/kg recovery ride. Saw shovel on there too. Sick but getting better.

A weak cold front blew in overnight so a session of pedaling technique was in order:
Maintain >90 RPM up a one mile false flat directly into the rising wind, turn off to loop around & recover.
Repeat, repeat, repeat....60 GI to start 56 GI to end.
Normally done on fixed gear the 70 GI fitted to my FG machine was too tall for today's conditions.
Old School stuff, as usual.

Me, looking old and grizzled at the top of Kitt Peak:

Looking towards Tucson from Geology Point. The point where the cars are stopped is where there was a snow-induced rockslide the weekend before I got there:

The last two days have been the "Road to Recovery". Not too bad, either. I rode the track bike on a little used section of road at a local airport. It featured a great surface, smoother than Hellyer in fact, and roundabouts at each end. One lap was .56 miles, 901 meters. No banking of course, but I was able to use it to great effect as a mock velodrome. On Tuesday and Wednesday I did a track workout, with a fifteen lap warmup (not easy when you're working without a paceline), and then sprint efforts. I did 3 x flying 200's and 3 x standing starts to failure (or there abouts), following a ten minute break after the warmup. Wednesday the warmup was slow, and my body took forever to really open and get going. but the sprints went remarkably well, considering. Thursday the warmup went well, but the wind was stronger, and it took more out of me. The following sprints showed that, I felt disconnected and the sprints were soft. I was riding 48/17 for the road (74 inches), which limited my punch and top speed, but I felt it was safer for what I was doing. Where that gear selection really limited me was on the flying 200's, I had no torque at the higher speed and I spun out pretty quickly. All in all, feeling pretty good, and as long as something else doesn't happen on the health front, I'm looking forward to the rebuild.

Pretty great day on the slopes yesterday. Got up there around 11:00 AM, parked a couple of hundred feet from the lift, and skied right onto the chair. Did a few warm up runs then headed over to the infamous Chutes. They had opened them back up Sunday so I missed making new tracks, but figured they would be holding some good snow. Wasn't disappointed on my test run down Yellowjacket. Good enough to ski the mother of all Chutes:

El Cap is the longest/narrowest/steepest shot down the mountain, which means it's the steepest pitch in Tahoe short of dropping off a cornice. As the sign suggests, great potential for a yard sale. It was pretty awesome, got chased down the hill by some basketball sized chunks of mogul. Ended up skiing all but two of the gates (small side runs). Some shots from the tail out:

When all was said and done:

That's crazy stuff, Ex! No wonder the pro teams tell their riders "no skiing!" I can waterski. Same thing, right?

Back to intervals today. It's been a while! It felt good to suffer so, I missed it. The ride came after a day off, and I almost never perform very well after a day off the bike. Today was no exception, although I did stay with the efforts and hit the targets. The sprints were not there, I don't have the kick right now that I once did. It'll come back. These overload training rides will ensure that.

It feels good to feel good - and to be sore!

Today will feature a standing start drill on the TT bike. Big gears, 53/16. It will be a real test of my back. Forget fitness, it's not there, yet. Getting ready to head out now....

Done. That overgear effort just completely wiped me out. I could only hold it for 1:20, 3 minutes was on the menu. The gear wasn't that hard, only 87 inches, but I am apparently fatigued and I'm certainly no where near form. Good news is that my back feels just fine. I lead with my right leg now, which makes for a softer launch but doesn't risk my lower back.
