Fourth week in Spain?!?!?! Sounds like an ideal retirement life. Looking forward to hearing more reports on Masters racing in the UK.

That's all we'd need out here is shovelhd animating our races more than what already happens. What really pains me is we also have ex-Pros and ex-Olympians in 50+ and 55+ SoCal Masters races. Our fields are big enough that I sometimes wish they'd put on a Masters 50+ 3/4 race.

Got up late and missed my club. Then I got caught in the same rain as VanceMac. Been on my rain bike all week because (1) all of my road bikes are in pieces and (2) it's been wet most of the week. However, riding on wet roads is much better than riding in the rain when it's about 50°F outside. I need to finish reassembling the Serotta so back to work...

The Masters category at the last track race had one cat4 (me), three cat3, and the rest 1s and 2s. The 40+ 3/4 crits they run occasionally are interesting, but still, I'd rather just go up against the best than worry about arbitrary delineations. I know you are same way (which is why you say "sometimes")... but, as you mention, our age group is getting so big they could probably make it work financially. And if it reduced those huge cat4 fields by a little, so much the better.

I'd love, LOVE, to see the seven of you guys in the same crit, in the same heat - Ex, Hermes, AzT, Shovel, VanceMac, AJ, Cleave. What a show that would be! It should be televised, in fact. No worries about any shunts, I'm not really an ambulance driver, I just play one TV.

I did a little over an hour at mostly recovery pace this afternoon. I was riding against a pretty stiff wind on the way home, so I had to up the effort a tad. I was proud of myself - I held back, from almost all temptations, and there were plenty of them! I will admit to a two sprints, right up LTR, and one longer effort where I was motorpacing a car on Ocean View in Pacific Grove (that is just so much fun!).

Tomorrow I sleep in. Oh, do I need it, too.

1.5 hours cross country. Between that and yesterday's 3 hours of downhill I'm pretty creaky and sore.

Today was as glorious as yesterday was dreadful. Sunshine in the canyons (Latigo) with those post-rain clear views making for a spectacular backdrop. 3:15 at "off-season is over" pace.

Ex ordered a day off today. And it is gorgeous up here, too. Well, the house needs cleaning. I've been wanting to fiddle with my motorcycle, too. That's training, right?

Beautiful out yes, but cold... rode the Portola loop - this is getting too easy (that's good), got back and sat in the shower till my toes warmed up.

Group fixie ride today. We started at my house and rode my favorite rolling 42 mile loop. Temps were in the mid-20's and about 1/2 the route was snow and ice covered. No one fell or crashed and my wife's home made chicken soup really hit the spot post ride.

Mail from training peaks... HTR up to 155 from 150... Does this actually mean anything?

Heart rate reserve? The difference between RHR and MHR. Mine is 122 BPM.

I've gotten two emails from them lately, one suggesting I increase my LTHR, and another suggesting I raise my FTP a couple of watts. I was surprised how close their FTP calculation was to my last 20' test... only 2 watts difference is negligible and could be supportable.

And... That was a typo... THR, threshold heart rate. This is still pre-CTS field test, so I guess we'll see how things go in the coming weeks.

Went fairly deep last week, lots of hours on the bike and a significant step up in intensity. Woke up this morning with a sore throat, which for me is a sure sign that I have overdone it and started to crash the immune system. So, a day or two off and a lighter week is in order.

I'm off the bike until the 11th. I've got low-grade prostate cancer, and we're doing the "watchful waiting" thing rather than slicing and dicing. Apparently any pressure and/or vibration in that area can artificially inflate one's PSA count, and I'll have a PSA test and the fickle finger of fate on the 11th - doc said two weeks off the bike prior to the appointment. My coach has given me a bunch of gym work in the meantime.

I've got detail cleaning on all my bikes, plus putting together my old CAAD9 that used to be too small but fits now that I've gotten more limber. Even going to get some touch-up paint...wish I could find some in celeste.

Ill be roll'in today for 45 minutes @Z2 followed with the first day of phase 2 of my core resistance program. I have to be a very good boy tonight as tomorrow's workout is a nut buster.

"Tuesday, 1-1: Fixie Flip/Flop workout on a short, steep OTS kind of hill climb of less than a min in totality. Hit it hard OTS really pulling and pushing to get up over the top, and then hit the descent with super high cadence really trying to stay ahead of the pedals with the push/pull such that you feel you’re driving the stroke rather that just keeping up with it. You go go full tilt on these, so you may hit Z4/5 on the top of the climb and then try to keep that HR up there as you descent. Keep the climb/descent to 2 min or under and do 10 reps with 5 min easy REC between reps."

Looks like a great workout, Jet. Except for that part about it being on the fixie.

Chuck - hoping for the best for you!
