Took me out for a week in two waves. Best of luck to you. I hope it passes quickly.

Now throat is OK but I'm tired, slightly upset stomach, and I've got a ringing in my ears like I did after my mild cold a couple of weeks ago. End result, no track tonight. :(

Assuming this passes quickly, I guess I'm lucky that I haven't been really laid out by the flu.

Chicken soup, home made. Plenty of clear liquids. Keep moving, but do get rest. Sara sez!

Your injuries sound eerily familiar, AzT. Keep an eye on that hematoma. I had one that big, and I still have residual effects from it - because I DIDN'T LISTEN (sound familiar?). Be sure to talk to your doc about it.

I'm glad you're moving, though.

RecChuck, you're there, my friend! You'll do great!! It's all uphill from here, too. Kudos!!!!

I bet you did, A'Jet.

I did 40 minutes of just riding around at various paces on the TT bike (aka the unbroken bike), trying to retain as much form as I can, stay limbered up, and determine what areas are likely to be my limiting factors. Now that it has been awhile, areas of lesser damage are popping up, like the half a cantaloup on my left hip. My left side, from the waist down, is a work of pop art. :-)

The 1/2 cantaloup is a hematoma. It consists of coagulated blood which means your red blood cell count is probably low. Many trauma centers give a shot of EPO with that injury to stimulate red blood cell production.

Doper.

I'm sure they'll give me a TUE for EPO, right?

Let's assume they did...

On a serious note, this is where the anti doping system for amateurs breaks down. The rules require a TUE approval by USADA prior to getting a banned substance out of competition. I have not seen a safe harbor for emergency or urgent care use. However, for one time use of a drug that is medically necessary as a result of an accident, I would not worry about it. In the most unlikely event that it became a problem, one would document the accident and USADA would approve a TUE post test.

However, as amateurs this is way beyond our capability to manage this stuff and over the top.

You may be underestimating some of those here.:D

It's amateur racing.

AzTallRider 02-06-13 09:57 AM

If she says "take this EPO", I'm taking the EPO. I've promised myself, and others, that I'll take the long view and do what's best for my health. Frustrating that it has happened during a build to my A race, with me me riding strong, but hey... that's probably more likely to be the case than not. The big question pending is VOS. As of now, I'd do the TT, and maybe the RR, but back out of the Crit. Not sure if I'm being realistic or not, as I haven't been through this before. In some ways, I feel fine (and mechanically, the riding feels fine), in other ways, I feel like a bug that has been stomped on by a storm trooper.

Absolutely. Do what you have to do. I was just pulling your chain.

How many times have we heard the "I had a hematoma" excuse?

That's what Lance said.

Slept 10 hours and have been laying around trying to decide whether or not to go to work for 1/2 day. Still feeling, but less so, the swollen gland on the side of my neck and I have a mild headache. Nothing big on my work calendar as far as I can remember.

"I got dropped on the hill at VoS because I had a swollen gland." Does that work? :D

AzTR, FWIW, if you've already paid the entry fee, you might as well do the TT. If the road race starts at the same location as last year, you can always hang at the back and wait for the hill to see what transpires from a pace and field dynamics perspective.

His head is a hematoma.

That's where my thoughts have been going, since I paid long ago. There is a chance I'll have the new frame built-up, but it's a bit of a long shot. I have a mechanic friend who says he will work with me overnight if need be - apparently the new brake setup under the BB can be a bit fussy to route. I did the last frame myself, but needed a couple of do-overs with the cabling. Ironically, I had to ride the Gunnar last year because I had broken my frame, and I may be in the same spot this year. TT bike is good to go, and I'll have some new wheels a teammate is selling me at a ridiculously low price. Maybe the aero savings will make up for my reduced red cell count? :)

If I don't race, I'll be there to play pit crew.

sarals 02-06-13 12:43 PM

I had a (huge) hematoma (on my hip). I ran a half marathon with it. Whiners.

:)

sarals 02-06-13 12:57 PM

Criss-cross intervals this morning. The PT hub blanked, again. I'm sure of the problem, though - the alkaline batteries. That will be handled.

It took a LONG TIME to warm up, I did the full 30 minutes at Z3 pace and I still wasn't quite there. The first 5 minute interval was a chore, but what really hurt was the recovery. The next two were much better, and I felt awake and normal after the third one. Yes, I'm normal. Sometimes.

Please, please, PLEASE don't make me have THESE LEGS on Sunday!

3 hour endurance ride to hook up with MEA for intervals on Mount San Bruno and laps around the Brisbane Circuit Race course. It was a beautiful winter day and 47 degrees when I left the house. There was not much wind on the way there but it picked up climbing and I had the wind at my back returning home. TSS 185

shovelhd 02-06-13 06:33 PM

An hour of tempo outside on the Redline with lights. Two taillights, my 2W blinker and a small steady, and my headlight with the new wide lens. The sun set right about at the halfway point. It was good to get outside.

Been getting some good workouts in lately, and finding a good groove. It feels like I've set a decent foundation to ramp up the intensity, as well as focus on some specificity. I envy you guys with very specific and narrow goals. The hardest part for me is being pulled in multiple directions.

Speaking of being pulled in different directions, do you want to ride team pursuit with MEA and me at LAVRA on February 17th?
