Very exciting AM commute. I stayed at my son's apt last night after the Terps(blew another) basketball game. He lives about 8ish miles from my work. Easy ride to his house, didn't need the studs. However this morn they proved an absolute must. I left his house around 630 to the sounds of ice scrappers. I had trouble walking down his grassy slope onto the street. He lives in a very hilly section of CP. Once on the street I saw the GLARE ICE. It was really reflecting with my lights. I decided to walk up to the top of his road. Once I realized I could not walk ...only option the bike:eek: I figured it was either then or never. Luckily I was in granny. Hopped on slowly, started to crank but expecting to fall on my *****. The studs took hold and off I went. Once I made it to the top I was faced with a very steep downhill. I started down slowly braking ever so gently. Successful! I made it up another then down...confidence was building. Eventually I made it to the main streets which were ice/slush wet pavement. Shoulders were usually ice covered snow but all manageable w/ the studs. Never once did I go down , never once did I put my foot down. I did get slush flung at me from passing cars. Edmonston Rd. had fast cars and a nasty shoulder. I opted for the shoulder with no problems. I ended taking Beaver dam rd (instead of Powdermill Rd). It was an icy mess but had no....and I mean no cars:thumb: It was a fun country ride at dawn. Finally the studs have won me over.
My other son joined us for the game. He drove down from Baltimore and said that Balto did not have as much snow. Did y'all get the ice this morning?

Kr did Charles Co get the ice?
NOVA got the ice as well

Essex had ice, but I opt'ed to stay home since my road was an ice rink at 4:30am--not even passable with a car. Since then, the salt truck has been up and down a couple times, so I'm sure that it's probably just slush now.

According to my thermometer, it's 29 degrees F outside, so the temperature has migrated +1 degree since yesterday.

Charlie, your story about using studded tires makes me want to get some for the K2 Arcadia "comfort" bike that I have sitting in a spare bedroom.

Hey everyone, I posted a while ago when I first got my hybrid bike. I rode it quite a bit last year before it got cold...and decided I'd upgrade to a road bike. Just bought a used 2005 Trek 5000, going to get fit on it tomorrow.

What trails other than the BWI loop / B&A trail are good to ride on for road bikes in the area? I used to do a loop from UMD on Paint Branch / Northwest Branch, but the trails had a lot of debris on them. Are those trails safe enough for the skinnier/slicker road bike tires?

We got ice but the roads coming in were good, they must have treated them real well during the night I guess. My driveway was covered as well as my truck. I had to scrape a little but nothing too bad.

Somehow I don't see you wearing pink jersey riding an upright hybrid. :)

Folks in the College Park area were having a really difficult time scrapping. Reports were putting the ice at 1/4" thick. That's a lot of ice. Scrapping ice is a horrible sound ...unless you don't have to do it.

Western MDtrail near Hancock is paved, new and flat.
http://bikewashington.org/ has a list of all trails in the region
If your tires are 23s then you might be pushing your luck on some of the rougher trails. People ride the trails w/ 23s but those are the most common flats I see out there.

RManS 01-28-09 06:15 PM

Wow, Hancock is quite a drive. Thanks for the recommendation though. My bike does have 25mm tires, I guess we'll see how it goes. I just got it fit, pics!

I rode this morning into work. It was an attention getting ride, especially with skinny 25mm road tires. The more frequented (by motor vehicles) streets were pretty clear, but streets like King Ave, Linda Ave, parts of Putty Hill Ave, Fowler Ave, Hiss Ave, Wilson Ave, and Taylor Ave had many icy spots--pretty much mile 5 thru 12 on the attached map.

By far, the worst was Linda Ave followed by the portion of Putty Hill between Belair Rd and Walther Blvd.

Nice ride RmanS. CF, but fairly stretched out. Looks like a long distance bike to me. :)

Have fun, Charlie! Be careful in the "mnts".

The Human Car 01-29-09 07:18 PM

Time 6:02 PM, Location, Scotts Level Rd, just north of Millford Mill.

What's that? Asked the driver of the car I am in (north bound.) It looks like a UFO on the ground or something.
I said most likely its GB on his way home from work.
You mean you actually know people crazy enough to ride in this weather?
Sure, what did you think, that I was the only one crazy enough to ride in this weather?
[Silence]

We saw another bike commuter on Falls Rd on a Mtn bike earlier but during daylight that's was not as impressive as GB's light set up.

Anyway thanks for helping me look less like a total idiot for riding in the winter. ;)

[Side note: I can now get ~80% of my weight on my new hip. It's coming along.]

Cool story, Barry. Was that today?

Anyway, glad to hear the bionic man is healing with no complications, but don't "overtrain"...uh, try to overhurry the healing process.

Hey, Bob, good going on the winter riding! :thumb:

Btw, I'm shooting for 1k for the month of January. I think I'll make it if these winter storms stay away for awhile.

HC203 01-29-09 08:30 PM

Hey NR-way to go, 1k for a winter month-impressive. My training log says about 400 miles, probably half indoors half road.
I'm impressed with all this ice riding-but you're all crazy.

Barry-Did you really get a new hip or is it just trashed from the crash? Friend of mine just got one-I'm thinking I need a new left shoulder.

I'm going to throw the SPPs stats off for their mileage challenge:

http://www.severnaparkpeloton.org/

My participating in their challenge, I will become a member of yet another bicycle club. That makes three. :innocent: BBC, DC RAND, SPP :o

The Human Car 01-29-09 08:45 PM

Yep that was today.

My strategy for fast recovery is lots of rest, lots of stretches, a fair amount of easy and light exercise within the given parameters and lots of chocolate ice cream or steak.:thumb: About once or twice a week I'll slightly push the envelope. The PT came today and gave me some new exercises and ouch! I've been taking it real easy on the thigh muscle waiting for that to heal before pushing it but that looks like that's going to change. So I've got some pushing to do just to get up to the minimum. But at least my range of motion is real good with the new hip. ;)

Edit: My goal for next week is to be able to crutch 2 blocks but waiting for some melt before giving it a go.

6:02PM That was ole' GB all right.
Thanks Barry. That gives me a good smile in an otherwise crumby January. :)
I wish you could be one of the UFO's along with me. In time.

BTW: I put up a couple of BBC rides- a 100K for March (a variation with corrections of the ride Harry and I did a few mondays ago) and also a new 200K for April. I'll probably put up the On Again, Off Again century for May. That is a great route. If Barry's not ready for that by May I'll postpone it.

Generally, I'd like to throw a 100-200K up to the BBC every month. See who shows.

I was contemplating doing the CAM challenge, doing my first today using the on again off again route, but just too much work. I'll just have to be satisfied with the riding I can get, when I can get it. How are you guys commuting, hasn't the shoulder been covered in ice? Taking the lane? GB-You got studs on them tires?

I'm actually enjoying my trainer time, if you can believe it.

That SPP link wouldn't open. what's their challenge?

I take the lane most times anyway, especially if there are multiple lanes to travel in, so it's not much of a change for me. There's ice on some of the shoulders, but the only road that I use that has a wide shoulder is Loch Raven, but it's painted for parking. Depending on the circumstances, I'm just outside of the "door zone" or taking the right lane on that road.

Announcing another SPP Mileage Challenge!

How many cumulative miles will the Peloton ride this year? Submit the most accurate guess by April 30 & win!

What is this? A contest to get more people out on their bikes, meet and get to know other members, and have fun.

Can I win a prize? Yes, the winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to any bike shop or restaurant of their choosing. Additional prizes TBD.

How do I win? Guess the total cumulative miles all participating SPP members will ride in 2009. Your guess (kept secret) must be submitted by April 30, 2009. You must participate to win.

Who can participate? All SPP members who ride at least 1,000 miles in 2009 and participate in at least 10 club rides can sign up. That's about one SPP ride a month and only 20 miles a week.

How will mileage be tracked? All participants will log their rides and submit a mileage total at the end of the month.

Can I see how many miles the Peloton has ridden as the year progresses? Yes, see the columns (Jan-Dec) next to each participant's name.

Does mileage count when not on an SPP ride? Yes, the honor system applies. Spin classes also count; just estimate the miles.

What counts as an SPP ride? Any ride posted on the website or in an email to the group so others can join in.

What are my chances of winning? Pretty good!

How do I get started?

1) Sign up by March 31 (request a form from Clint and email Jan, Feb, and Mar miles).

2) Submit a total Peloton mileage estimate by April 30. Click the Mileage link above in April to see who is riding.

3) Keep track of your mileage by month starting January '09.

4) Submit your monthly mileage total by the 10th of the next month to Clint.

What if I don't like the rules? Submit constructive suggestions by March 15 so I can update these FAQs by March 31.

Is anyone ineligible? Clint, as moderator, will ride and contribute miles, but cannot win the prize.

How do I get some inside scoop to make a better guess? Talk to others on rides before April 30, look at the 2008 totals, take an online class in statistics.

When do I get my prize? Monthly mileage is due by the 10th. The winner will be announced after January 10, 2010.

Any other questions: email Clint

Note: to remain an active member of SPP, you should participate in the Challenge or request a waiver (e.g., medical or work-related exemption).
Here's their 2008 data:

Like NR, I usually am taking the lane on single lane roads with no shoulder. Got to. Ice or not.
I've never tried studs- just being careful... and lucky.

I wouldn't recommend the On Again, Off Again route this time of year. You're gonna kill yourself dealing with the icy ruts of the trail. When I rode it in Dec. there was a layer of recent snow down which made the trail occasionally slippery and also masked holes, sticks, glass, etc. underneath. Not too bad then, but I wouldn't ride it with this ice.

I am skipping January as a century month. Will resume in Feb. Harry, maybe we could pick out a sunday DC Rand ride to ride with NR in February. Maybe the 15th?
