I didn't get an email, but she's got the only ride this weekend up on the site:

SUNDAY RIDE, FEBRUARY 1, 2009
Dear Friends,
We are scheduling a ride for Sunday only this weekend, and it's an EASY
one.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2009
"CLIPPETY-CLOP TO CROSS KEYS," starting from Roy Rogers on Thos. Johnson
Drive in Frederick. MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m. We're starting later than
usual because this is a pretty easy ride, whoo hoo! We're mostly
checking out the beginning and end of the "Over to Dover" "world's
easiest" permanent that I've submitted to RUSA for approval. The ride
will head north to Cross Keys PA, where we'll have lunch at the Cross
Keys Diner. I'll be stopping to check out a couple of stores and an
additional eating establishment for future reference, too, but riders
can skip those if they like. The checkout route includes approximately
1/2 mile of gravel on Baumgardner Rd (not on the official Permanent
route). 100 miles with 62-mile and 88-mile short options.

Here are the directions to the ride start:
ROY ROGERS, 191 Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick, MARYLAND
From D.C. Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.
Continue north on US15 3.7 miles. Take Exit 16, Motter Ave exit (sign
for Frederick Community College). Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto
Opossumtown Pike. In a quarter mile turn right onto Thomas Johnson
Drive, then left into the shopping center. Park back in the Weis Market
lot.

GB-I may be heading out of town for a few days on the 15th for some warm weather riding, not sure yet, have to see how work goes. I hear you on the NCR during winter. I've been on there when it's icy and wet, no fun. So, maybe not the 15th but another weekend for sure.

I saw the DCRand ride for Sunday but not sure I can do that since we're having a few people over for dinner that night. I'll have to test the waters so to speak, maybe I can squeeze in the weenie 62.

:notamused: The Route 40 flat tire curse has struck again. I thought I was going to make it, but right before Mohrs Lane, about 8 miles left to go, another Tufo bites the dust.

Anyway, here's the ride:

http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/20351

Solo ride out to Wilson Point, then down into Chase, up Ebenezer Rd to Pulaski Hwy (US 40). I followed US 40 to Havre de Grace riding through the town to Tidings Park where I took this picture:

NoRacer,
I only have a Cateye8 that does not do pace, what does that mean, ie.----3' 46 /mile?
It might be a dumb question but I just dont know.
That ride sounded pretty nice to, 70 miles in 30 degree weather. You have 10 times, yes 10 times the mileage I have in 2009. I am a wimp. I am thinking of going out today for maybe 30, that is my plan, a loose plan but a plan nontheless, I shall see.

Edit to follow-up.......went 23.26 with 15.2 average. Lightweigth to Baltimore standads but it is better than sitting and watching TV!

NR's ride report inspired me to work up a quick ride sketch. Google maps seemed to bonk after the 120th turn and the 1000th character to the http link. LOL. I'll use this to nail down a ridable route for the future, but it just looks too cool on google maps not to share with y'all.

Got at least a few miles in today-25 to O Ridge and back.
Slow pace, trying to keep it aerobic but no matter what when I head uphill my HR skyrockets.
Fun going back up Jerome Jay. A little concern over ice.

Hey KR! Sorry... I didn't see this until now. I did a century today (actually 106 miles due to a cue sheet error), and didn't have a chance to get online until now.

3' 46/mile means it takes 3 minutes and 46 seconds to go 1 mile. Speed from that would be:

60 minutes / 3.77 minutes per mile = 15.9 mph

Man, why am I still up?!

Anyway, GB, I like it, too.

I thought Broening Hwy was restricted--no bikes allowed according to a MD bike map. Maybe the status has changed?

Headed to bed... 4:30am is going to come awfully early today. :notamused:

The Human Car 02-02-09 01:00 AM

Broening Hwy (MD 695) is not on the prohibited list: http://www.sha.state.md.us/exploremd...icyclists6.asp

FWIW I finally picked up my replacement camera and took about a mile walk around the Inner Harbor with lots of rests. It was really great to be out today.

No problem NR I can understand and myself do not log on too much anyway. Thanks for the explaination ,that makes total sense now that I see it. I have yet to do a century but it is on my list to do this year.

Here's the links to my ride from yesterday (Sunday). It's split into 3 parts, because my cell phone reset for some reason. I didn't notice it until the lunch stop, so I manually entered the missing portion of the route (part 2) using the cue sheet, but accounting for a messed up cue at Irishtown Rd in Pennsylvania where we should have made a left turn, but the cue said go right.

I did about 15 of them last year. I plan on increasing that number this year, as well as break 12,000 miles for the year.

NoRacer, you are a beast. I could only dream of doing 12,000 miles in a year. My goal for this year is 2,000. I hit 1,160. Last year. I have to divide my time with the family so I get out as much as I can.

kr- I'm with you on the Cateye, I just want to know how far, what speed and my average, keep it simple I say. Technically I have not completed my first century as of yet. I did 2 rides last year that I hit in the 90's so I guess I could have jut ridden around the parking lot to finish it out , but I'm happy with those. I'll get a couple in this year though.

Thanks, Jeff!

Your're going to have to come back out to that century in Berryville and do the "full monty". You can ride with me and Janet G, perhaps.

brandenjs 02-02-09 09:29 AM

That's one of plans for the year. Last year I was being a nice guy and spending the day peddling with the wife. It was great quality time for us. I guess I'm going to have to get her training for this years ride.

I had to pick up a new HR monitor, third one. I decided to get the Polar cs200 as it was on sale at Performance. All I need plus HR and the cadence monitor which I haven't received yet. I've been doing some indoor training and the cadence will come in handy. Not indoors today, another spring day.
Snow tonight?

NR-Thoughts on rollers? I may pick up a cheap set at Performance, on sale, good reviews. I understand it's not really a resistance training, rather cadence, control, pedal stroke.

It may fall on deaf ears with this group, but I will put in a plug for going electronics free. I do use a 6 function Cateye on my Trek roadie, but there is a different level of excitement for me heading out in the morning to begin a century or 200K on my Kogswell with no bike electronics. The handlebars are just covered in tape and my fingers. :)

I do use my watch as a navigational aid. I assume 4 min/mile, so I can check the time till the next turn. If I make any detours from my cued route I'll use bikely or googlemaps when I get home to figure out the corrected mileage. -GB

I have a set of Performance rollers. I like it better than my trainer. Everything you listed can be helped, but you can do resistance on it, too, if you get into a high enough gear. I've used mine for intervals in the past.

Here's a screen capture where I got the rollers up to 40 mph!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...mphrollers.jpg

You have to watch out because the rear tire starts to slide sideways once you create enough heat from the friction.

You'll want a mat underneath your rollers when doing intervals, because if the rear tire slips off, you could leave a mark on your floor or carpet or whatever.

I like the thought of riding with no electronics also. That would be a nice challenge on a long ride to keep track of turns. After all it is about the ride, and there are alot of times I don't even want to look at my average speed. Some days I just don't feel like hammering. Yesterday was one of them. I did a nice 23 mile loop around Summit Point WV. It was a beautiful day for a ride.

My ride, yesterday, was done with no speedo or odo (in other words, I left the iBike home). The only thing I had was my cell phone to record data, but the screen is way too small to see anything while I'm riding even though it shows speed, distance, and time. Essentially, I'd just match up road names with the cue sheet whenever I'd go off the front. After a while you get a feel for how far a mile is, but GB's method is more accurate if you can come up with an average.

Anyone planning on riding down to the Symposium on Wednesday?

According to last reports from the Severna Park Peloton folks the trail is in bad condition. If someone is riding down, it'll have to be on the roads.

I'd like to ride down, but I don't think I can escape work.
