I'm all up in that. :D Bicycle Quarterly and Jan Heine, the editor is the dude these days when it comes to high performance rando equipment. His reviews are often very detailed and thoughtful. Unfortunately, his Coho review was so weird it made me wonder whether he even rode the bike.

That tire review has almost single handedly boosted the market for high quality, high volume tires. Great stuff.

I noticed that he poo--poo'ed all over Tufo tubular clincher tires. Oh well. They work for me.

Seemed he had issues with mounting them. Not a true poo-poo.

So are you putting 42mm red tires on your Coho? This I gotta see.

DO any of you guys ride these? Pricey but decent tires usually are. I like my commuting Schwalbes MP but they are harsh and heavy. It would be nice to ride a set of plush tires that don't slow you down for long wknd rides.

I bought grand bois cypres tires for the Kogs.
The grand bois are exactly as Jan describes- forgiving and fast. HOWEVER, they often don't make it out of my glass-strewn alley without puncture, so I keep 38mm panaracer Col de la Vie's on the Kogswell year round now. I do use the grand bois as a spare though since they are foldable.

I did buy the Grand bois in 700c for the Coho. $115/pair! I bet they'll ride great on that bike though.

BTW I head down to Franklinville NC this sunday for the build up. Psyched. :thumb:

Anyone riding the Tour de Carroll this weekend?

So would you consider the tires you ride great for long distant Sunday rides(Monday rides in your case) AND/OR touring tires carrying a load. Since they flat easily I worry about their weight bearing abilities on tour. Schwalbes MP(my commuter tires) never flat thus I never miss my train. I would like something else for rec rando/touring rides.

Your thinking is generally correct. There are exceptions, but generally as you gain flat resistance you lose suppleness and speed. A tire like a grand bois can easily handle the weight of a tourer. It's got a much higher thread count than your Schwalbes, but the casings are so soft that they just don't do much against glass. Schwalbes or Continental Gator Skins are great bomb proof tires.

One tire you might check out is the Rivendell designed Ruffy Tuffy. Fairly light, but with kevlar. I run those on the fixie. -GB

Anyone racing in Waynesboro Grand Prix this sunday?

I'm back, internet and home phone were down for over a week.
Glad to see everyone riding.

I did commute to work once last week, left @ 520am got there by 630ish, (could have swore I saw Bob), I did not realize from mlk all the way to work was ALL uphill, no problems at all, going through west baltimore the roads are rough but doable. The way home with the climb out of ellicot city being the first thing I did kinda sucks. I ran into 2 other people commuting from catonsville to the city, they ran all the lights so I was kinda left behind. No issues going through the city except the traffic jams downtown. Again about same time getting home.

Weds I also rode home from work.

Today my son had his Trike-A-thon @ school, he was the only one wearing gloves,helmet and sunglasses, most kids got tired after a few laps, he kept going until the teachers declared it over.
He keeps telling me about how he won the race.

Dumb question when is the spring monument to monument ride? looking forward to it.
Begining in June I can again have my century a month, finally.

On the subject of bike geekness my Travel Agent finally arrived and is installed so my rear brakes are working normally now. (A Travel Agent lets me work longer throw V-brakes with shorter throw STI levers.)

I did Jefferson Cup. I liked the race, but the distance sort of turned me off regarding having to travel so far.

I'm reluctant to pursue this at this time due to my hip thing. I have weekends where I feel strong and others where I feel I need to take it easy. Till I can figure out a pattern I am reluctant to make long term plans.

I'm going to take half a day off. I'll be leaving Towson (driving--had to pick up my laundry from work and replace with fresh clothing) at ~11:30am. I should be home by noon. Anyone relatively close wanna play "hooky" with me? I'm thinking about heading to the Eastern Shore (driving) and ride from there into Delaware.

I'd take you up on the offer, but Team BBC is having a practise session tomorrow in Columbia. I plan on riding out to it, doing the practise, maybe riding a few more miles with the team afterwards, then riding home--definitely a full day.

The ride was from Stevensville on th eastern shore to Denton, DE and back. I've always wanted to ride on Route 50. I actually did a couple of sections of it near Queenstown.

Saturday Ride Report

Started about 6am, little cooler out than expected 53 degrees so I put on the UA shirt, Head out to hit 702 and take back river to rocky point, I haven't been there in years. I got to the park and headed to the beach, like a scene from a movie. As soon as I sat down a great blue heron was flying across the water right in front of me, so quiet all I could hear was waves. I stayed there for 15 minutes taking it in, I remember the beach was soooo much bigger years ago (maybe I was smaller also), on the way back I took a ride past my old house on back river neck road and checked out the pond in the back yard, then since I had no planned route I winged it and went up eastern to kane to dundalk. Turns out there was a flea market @ old dundalk shopping center, no bike stuff though. Then I headed home. Good ride, little slower pace, nice for a change. Got home @ exactly 8am wife was standing at the door with her bookbag on ready to go.

I really do like riding up back river neck rd, long spots of nothing but trees and no noise but my tires.

I'll do the same tommorow 530ish to 8ish, no route planned just gonna wing it, anyone wanna meet up let me know. Gotta squeeze in them rides where I can.
