Josh,
You could probably park on the street around the water tower. It's at the intersection of Roalnd Ave. and University Parkway.
I'll be there at 7:30-on my heavy bike.

I just returned from an out of town conference. Wish I could attend the ride, enjoy folks. Looks like a nice night for a ride.....or playing pool.

Thanks Max. I was surprised by the amount of dirt roads. I think it was over 75% dirt/rail trail. Just looked at your pictures. Very nice pixs and your weather looked awesome. Didn't see a cloud. Where was the garden? I always check out the Monkton Garden along that route but that was a different one.

Yes, the weather was great Saturday and Sunday. The forecast for Friday in PA was pretty unpromising, though, which was why I ended up delaying my start date. I *really* would have liked to stick to my original plan of riding Friday, spending all day Saturday at the state park, and coming home Sunday, instead of doing the whole thing in two days.

That garden was in Hanover Junction, PA.

Moonlight Madness...

...and it was:

http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/25210

I saw GB, HC, Josh and Laurie, and Barry there, followed later by some of the gang from the Severna Park Peloton--Janet, Jim, Mike Z, Bob C (hope I didn't miss anyone).

HC203 07-31-09 06:34 AM

Charlie-I enjoyed the Crazy Guy report too. I haven't done any stealth camping but given the opportunity I think it's the way to go. When I rode from Quebec City to Burlington last year the official campgrounds were so spread out as to be useless. I did hotels.

Moonlight Madness-A great turnout, a lot of confusion, I can truly appreciate the need for a ride leader now. People were following me through the northern portion and then everything got screwy around Eutaw. I was dead on the way home, maybe from trying to sprint uphill on my touring bike.

At one point I was going to ask you if you wished you left the "heavy bike" home taking the carbon one instead. I decided better not go there.

Oh, by the way, thanks for leading our way north. I think you did a great job.

I saw you shooting east on Boston as I waited on Odonnell for the group. What a cluster f___ in Fells Point. I can't believe that whole group was following me, I tried to pick up the pace at times and at others just thinking nope don't want to burn out. Then I felt pressure to lead strong because they were following.
You can't charge up hills too many times with that bike without feeling it. Yes, the carbon would have been a better choice, half the weight.

GB came by as I was waiting at Odonell. He and I and another chap even stopped for a brew at Sharky's which is when the group finally passed.

The ride yesterday was fun, granted not everyone had ride etiquette (be nice if we did all stop for lights and TRY to take only one lane and not the entire road), The wife and I only did about 10 miles total, we turned around as did many others.

I think we had over 100 people? I lost cound at 70 or so. It was kinda critcal massish.

After I got the car I got behind a large group on eutaw, cool seeing 50 blinking lights. Drivers were very patient with the groups.

The wife did great, she now sees first hand how safe riding can be and she held a line and didn't panic when she had people in front and next to her. She even said she'll ride with me from home to ft howard and back.

If anyone wants to start a weekly or monthly city night ride (small group), short ride 20 or so miles, that would be cool. I always wanted to ride through the city but know any good routes.

Monthly would probably be a good goal for starters, like last Thursday of every month, something like that.

The Sunday loop I do sometimes with a group of guys up here is down to Ft. Mchenry, round the harbor to Fells Point then up to Patterson and north.

I'd be up for a smaller, lower-key group. I'm not a big fan of CM-style atmosphere.

Great so we can call it the
monthly BFF ride.

I'm good to go, weds-sunday nights anytime

joshuaandlauri 08-01-09 08:32 PM

Started today with a 45 minute hike @ patapsco with the wife and kids then I got in todays ride, most of my recent riding has been flat miles, so today I was able to sneak in 20 miles made it as hilly as I could from home ,out and back. Avg was lower than I liked @ 16mph, due to me trying to get up hills faster then cruising on the flats or down hill to recover.

21 miles, 1200 feet.

NR: any other local routes w/more climbing for 20 miles? figured you would know.

Around the Patapsco river valley there should be some good climbing. Riding up to and around Prettyboy Reservoir there's many sharp short hills and longer ones like Spooks Hill Rd.

Sunday ride--in the rain:

http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/25293

Well, when I started, it wasn't raining.

I was heading to Annapolis from Essex, but by the time I got to Washington Blvd it started to rain and I knew from looking at the weather before I left that it could only get worse, so this time I turned around and headed back to the Inner Harbor for shelter. I sat outside on a park bench at the promenade for a while until the rain subsided a bit, then headed home via Boston St.

The rain started up, again, once I reached the Travel Center. The McDonald's there, beckoned to me for breakfast, so I stopped and had a large orange juice and two breakfast sandwiches. By this time, the lightning started making an appearance, so I took my time and waited until everything subsided.

I made it home the rest of the way with no incident taking the long way--via Heritage Park, then Merritt Blvd to Eastern Ave.

The calorie intake may have exceeded the calorie output on that ride. :innocent:

I spent my weekend playing with shoe goo and other bike maintenance. As NoRacer commented on a ride I have a lot of little puncture tears in my tread so I decided to patch them all up. Day 1; so far I am happy with how well the patches have blended in, looks a bit funky on close examination but not really lumpy as I feared. And I'm not sure if I went too crazy with the stuff or not crazy enough. And I had a crazy thought with going crazier, what if for the winter I added some grit to the goo to help with traction on ice as studs seem like over kill, thoughts?

dspaff088 08-02-09 05:42 PM

i like that idea, although i dont think the added traction will last very long.. probably going to have to reapply often

dspaff088 08-02-09 05:45 PM

and that night ride looked like alot of fun, seemed to be a pretty good crowd... been stuck picking up extra hours at work before i head back to virginia for school...

Oh well maybe next year

:notamused: I know. Recently, I jumped on the scale. I'm up 15 pounds from where I should be. Time to get some trail running in.

I like the idea, too, but I'm not sure how well it will work over time. You may only get one ride executed, before it starts to wear apart. I've never tried it, so let me know how it goes. I may give it a whirl using sand.

What I like about ShoeGoo is that even if the surface layers wears away, I'm pretty sure the gashes stay filled. In the winter, the surface coat tends to separate a lot sooner.

My weight stopped at 192 or 3, which aint bad since I was up to about 210 a few years ago. The scale stopped moving but my the only belt that I've been wearing for years is down two holes, what up? I tell myself that I lost it around the middle but gained muscle from bike and run. I'm still hoping to drop 5 before October.

Barry-Given that terrible crash you had last winter and the recuperation required I'd say studs would be a wise investment. my 2¢.

My latest entry to the "The Stupid Stuff I See During My Commute to/from Work"

Update 8/3/2009:

For over a year now, there has been a terrorist driving Taylor Avenue at approximately 6:30am.

On at least three occassions the driver of a rather large black pick-up truck with sporty-loud mufflers, duel chrome tailpipes, and Puerto Rico flag stickers in the window has threatened me while riding this area of Taylor Avenue:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...erroristRD.png

Mind you, the driver of this truck is not just biased toward bicyclists on his road, but he's an equal opportunity terrorist, threatening all road users that slow him down.

Finally, today, in the daylight, I was able to get more details about this terrorist, including the license plate number 62T 521 (maybe 6T2 521). My last encounters with him were winter mornings where it was much darker at 6:30am then it was today.

On the map, this terrorist uses the area with a red circle as his launching pad (far right straight-going lane), if caught at the red traffic control light. The far right lane ends after crossing Perring Parkway. This guy hits the gas hard and passes the line of traffic to his left from this right hand lane. He must be hitting 50 mph from a standing stop on this 30-35mph road. Don't ever be a bicyclist in front of him in this lane. It tees him off to no end--he'll pass you (once he's able, if blocked by traffic to his left) to your left within inches nearly catching you with his side view mirror if you have the audacity to be in his lane not allowing him to "launch".

Note:
I thought I snapped a cell phone picture of the terrorist, but I guess I forgot to hit the button the second time to save it. Why in the heck can't they give you the option to save automatically without having to ask you if you want to save the picture. It's not like I'm going to run out of film since it's digital with 8Gb of memory it it.

Harry, I hear ya but the day of my crash no freezing conditions were predicted and conditions were such that cars traveling the road were turning light rain into slush, normally well traveled roads prevent slush not create it. So even if I had studded tires I'm not sure I would have had them on that day, which is what got me to thinking of a next best option that I could/would use when not needed.

dspaff088 08-03-09 03:48 PM

Well I have been a few days off the bike, sadly, too much partying and working lol.

So normally I plan a ride and execute, well today I decided to do some exploration. And oh was that a horrible idea. All in all I basically looped/zig zagged patapsco state park, I think I counted descending then ascending the river valley four times. And then realized I was alot further from home than I wanted to be for a semi recovery ride...

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united...24933519410094

here is a link, was a nice little tour of howard county... I swear the whole damn thing was uphill... and too many 18% grade signs. on another note i hate that about mapmyide... the whole grade averaging thing. I think i remember 4 different grade warning signs :twitchy:

well just thought i would rant about my adventure this afternoon

Ha, I'm up 5 pounds from a few months ago, I keep telling myself the same thing. I need to get more consistant longer rides in and maybe stop eating taco bell, mcdonalds and pizza.

I have cut back to 1 soda per day. Thats a start.

However, I do have a chocolate covered strawberry short cake in the fridge the wife got my for my B-Day, it would just be rude NOT to eat it.

I'm getting old. Boo Hoo.

I love the map around miles 7 & 8.
That backroads tour BBC ride I took last month has me wanting to do a similar ride closer to home.
I bet we could create a 50/50 on road/off road ride using lots of patapsco. Maybe a metric century would be nice length.

Anyone have suggestions of their favorite unpaved roads/paths on the westside?
