My Sunday riding will be minimal since I'm doing one tomorrow and Sunday is my wife's elderly parent care day. I'll probably just do something easy and back by 10am.

Harry, I just sent Crista an email requesting a copy of her cue sheet (in case it's different then the BBC's), so if you or anyone else who wants to ride down to meet them wants a copy, let me know via PM with your email address included.

I'm up for meeting the randos at Little Havana. I live south of Baltimore, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a way to link up with their route. NR, do you know if they have an ETA for lunch?
I sent another email to Crista querying her on their ETA to the restaurant. No answer yet, so stay tuned. Also, I will be meeting them along the route, so I'll be riding in when they do. |

It might be tough to be on the route at just the right time to intercept :) but I'll at least meet up with you all at Little Havana, and then maybe ride south with them for a while on my way home. |

I received an email from Crista, but she's not sure of what to tell us about an estimated time to the restaurant, so I'm going to take a "WAG" and say 4 hours from their departure time of 7:30am which means about 11:30am-12:00pm. |
Ok--my plan for Sunday morning:
- Up at 5am - Leave house by 5:30am - ride to Carroll Park on Washington Blvd - if anyone wants to meet me there, I plan to be there by 7am - leave Carroll Park by 7:30am; riding to the Hollins Ferry cue (keep an eye out for Max somewhere around Dorsey Run) - follow cue until I run into Crista & Chuck - ride back into Baltimore with C&C following them up to the monument and then back down toward Ft. McHenry (Fort St) toward Little Havana. - lunch - home |
NR, what time do ya think you'll be back in essex? I'm thinking about going, depending on the sitter situation.

Whazzzzzzzzzzzz Up?
Hey guys long time no see... How are you all doing? I see its all the same faces here with a few more new folks that I don't recognize.
Anyhow, I think the last time I posted here was over a year or so ago. Probably about 75lbs lighter ago. I just got into other things... The last time I posted I was living in Severn and riding in the Crownsville/Crofton/Davidsonville areas. Now I have moved south and live in Chesapeake Beach. I have been here for over a year. We finally found a real nice house and we are close to the bay and not too far a commute to work for me. The riding is great over here on the hills near the bay, you guys would love them. I don't know if they are as steep as Elicott City but we have some nice ones. I just got back on the bike after roughly a year on non-riding. I think I jumped on my mountain bike a few times but the Giant has been a lonely soul until last month. I gained a lot of weight back that I had previously lost. I hooked up with the Oxen Hill Bike and Trail Club and I have been doing club rides with them and starting to get my legs back. I have been averaging 50-80 miles a week and shooting for the Seagull Century in October. I'm supposed to do a 43 mile B ride tomorrow here in Calvert County so I hope it goes well. It will be the longest ride I have done since the 2007 Covered Bridge Ride in Lancaster a couple years ago. Balt. Charlie and NoRacer still amaze me!!! Great riders you two. Take Care, Chat Later |

Would love to do the DC rand hook up and lunch etc, but alas I have to watch the kids while my wife's out, and one boy has ear infection so I can't go AWOL. I was away all day today doing the Eat a Peach charity ride up in Westminster. Nice hilly ride, giant rollers. One in my group got sagged but the rest of us did 67, getting hot at the end.

So, it looks like the plan is to head for Little Havana after arriving at the Baltimore Monument?
It looks like the easiest place for me to get on the route from my house is the Race/Hanover cue (mile 82.22 on the BBC cue sheet). I think I'll try to work it so that I'm well ahead of the rando group, though; I expect they're much faster riders than I am (isn't everyone, HA! :D) and I've never been on River Road (I always turn left when I get to Furnace Avenue to get to Patapsco), but I expect it might be quite hilly. I want to make sure I'm with the group by at least the turnoff onto the trail at the RESCO plant, so I don't get hopelessly lost on that stretch before we get to Charles. |
I just now got around to checking the forecast for tomorrow.
:eek::eek: I'm gonna see if I can strap an air conditioner onto my handlebars . . . |

I have to go in to work today. :( No ride/lunch for me.

Maxine, I glad you have to work... whoops, that didn't come out right. I mean, I'm glad that when I cancelled out that I didn't leave you in a bind.
Anyway-------------drum roll----------------- Escort to Ocean City - the Epic Journey - 205 miles (Three parts) http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/25515 http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/25516 http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/25519 Even though my butt is still a bit sore, I guess it's time to think about heading downtown for lunch. I'll be in a white jersey. I'm sorry to hear that Maxine can't make it. I'm hoping Bob (and others) still comes out to play. |
I woke up late so I missed the club rides, thinking of doing the lunch thing, what time? If any one is up for just riding around PM or call me.

Good day to take off NR and max, I was sweating just walking from my van to my front door.
200 miles in one day, go you! Maybe one day if I ever have that many hours to spare I'll try it too. I'll probally get some miles in this evening after 6pm or so. took a second look at NR last post, nothing can hold him down, 200 miles down and he's out again. |

Seriously, I am sorry I had to miss the meet-up, I think it would have been fun. The unexpected weekend trip to the office is, unfortunately, part of the job. Fortunately, though, it's pretty rare. I didn't have a whole lot of time to ride today -- I'm going to be working on the BBC newsletter the rest of the night. As I had planned to do this morning, I rode over to the Hanover/Race intersection on the "Monument to Monument" cue sheet, and made that right turn onto Furnace (instead of the left I always take), and checked out River Road. What a fun, swoopy little piece of road! I hit 31 mph briefly on one of the little downhills. :thumb: I made the turn onto Nursery Road, but turned around to head back home before I got to Hammonds Ferry.

An off-the-cuff first double century -- yeah, NR is just off the charts! Ya know all those "Chuck Norris is so tough" jokes? ("When the boogeyman goes to sleep at night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris." "Outer space exists because it's afraid to be on the same planet with Chuck Norris.") I bet we could come up with some NoRacer biking-themed versions. :D |
Very nice lunch time meet up with the DC Randos. Maile Neel was excitedly taking pics of my new Coho. The group waited too long for a table, but eventually ate good food and drank many pitchers of water. Then NR and I watched them head back out into the heat for their return ride to DC.
NR and I enjoyed a few beers, a couple mimosas, a late brunch and lots of good chatting. Nice time chilling out in the heat. Thanks. |

NR and I enjoyed a few beers, a couple mimosas, a late brunch and lots of good chatting. Nice time chilling out in the heat. Thanks. Little Havana was super busy. I was the first one there at ~11:45am. I asked if a group of cyclists had been here already, but the answer was no, so I waited around for a while. At 12:05 I checked my email and saw that Bob was saying that he couldn't make it. I sent him a reply saying that no one has shown up yet. Bob calls me and during the call Leslie shows up followed about 15 minutes later by Maile, Lane, and Mike. It was probably another 15-20 minutes before we finally were seated. By this time I was feeling pretty dehydrated, so I was really happy to see a couple of pitchers of ice water arrive at our table. Bob and I had Blue Moon beer. I chased mine with the ice water. At the time, neither Bob or I felt hungry, but after the randos left and the alcohol in the beer started to kick in, apparently it stimulated both our appetites and we were ready to eat. Finishing lunch we headed toward the Inner Harbor where we bid each other good-bye. On the way home, I really felt the heat. I took it slow (~14 mph average) heading toward Fells Point and the up Aliciana to Boston St. I went straight up Boston across Delvale and up to Merrit Blvd then Eastern Ave. Once I got home, I ran a tub of cool water and sat in it for a while, sipping water from a Gatorade bottle and just relaxing. Altogther I chalked up about 223 miles for the weekend! Whoohoo! |
I love Little Havana, let's organize some sort of ride that ends there. I can always take the light rail back.
Never done a double century, way to go. Seems like most of the organized doubles are out west. Hot and humid indeed, worked on the house-sweating profusely. Made it out to the ghost bike ceremony, very chilling and sad. Everybody should go there and take a look at that scene. I was angry while riding down there thinking about how car centric our culture is and how hostile, impatient, inconsiderate, and downright murderous motorists can be. Though sometimes I don't even think they see us, not programmed to. Also, we have zero laws to protect us. When I rode in Quebec last year, same deal as France, they have to give you one meter clearance or serious fine. A couple years ago I rode in France with my son and even though they drive pretty crazy there they are oh so friendly towards cyclists, waving, getting out of your way etc. sigh. |

how this BS "Some cities allow the memorials to stand, while others take them down. Baltimore City's Transportation Department tells Eyewitness News the chain will be cut and will be taken down in a week or so. " you would think with dixon in office the wouldn't do that, thats just wrong. |
Dear Honorable Mayor Dixon,
I'm writing to you regarding the Ghost Bike on the corner of Maryland Ave. and Lafayette St. and the disturbing and disheartening news that the transportation department may take it away. I know that you have said on camera that you would like to keep the memorial up if it can act as a reminder for motorists to drive safely. I hope you will follow through with this pledge and join the biking community of Baltimore in helping to make this Baltimore's first and last Ghost Bike. I was among the mourners and activists at the memorial, a very grim scene, one that nobody wants to see repeated. Kind Regards, Harry Campbell |
