Yeah, it's toast. Which is annoying  because I am *really* fussy about helmets and hate having to shop for a new one. I'm going to Race Pace in Columbia after work tonight, hopefully I'll find something there. (I have an "emergency spare," but I don't like it enough to make it my new primary helmet.)

I recently replaced my helmet because the plastic tensioner broke. I just did a google shopping search for the exact same model and size and bought a replacement online.

Hmmm, I suppose online is an option if I don't see anything at the shop. My last few helmets have been Giro (they always seem to fit my head better than others); the one I destroyed Sunday, and the one before that, too, I believe, were the "Havoc" model, which is actually a mountain biking helmet. Giro doesn't make that model, new, any more.
Yeah, NR, I dunno -- I'd be a little worried about getting a helmet from a place like Amazon, LOL! Helmets and tires are probably the only two places on/near the bike that I won't cheap out. :) |

I think it may be fixable. I believe the extracycle is aluminum. true? If so, I doubt Balt Bike Works can weld it. alum. welding is very specialized, BUT I suspect it would be not too hard to find a welder who could put a RD tab on there.

Great time guys! Thanks again. I placed a link to Max's and your pictures in Part 2 of my blog for the ride. |
 !!!!!!!!!! Killed another rear hub!
On the way home, the hub wasn't freewheeling properly. The chain was trying to bunch up toward the chainrings which means that the forward motion of the wheels rotated the cassette forward. When I got home and pulled the wheel off the bike, the cassette literally fell off of the wheel! Somehow the axle became bound and it was cut in two right behind the inner freehub bearing. The part that was still in the freehub was stuck. I couldn't get it free. So, to fix this, I'll need to get another axle and a freehub body complete with bearings. Grrrrrrr! Until then, I won't be riding my carbon wheels. |

http://www.flickr.com/photos/2797683...7623782503603/ Anyway, I have the Topolino wheels with fat tires on the bike today. I decided to play around with some Conti Cyclocross Speed tires--35 mm. They are very supple. In fact, they feel too supple--like a a good piece of glass or shard of metal would have no problem ruining my day if I ran over one. Not sure how long they'll be on the bike. Maybe, they'll come off after I ride up the NCR to Glen Rock this weekend. |

I got a new helmet I like -- a new Giro model that is almost identical in profile to my old one. They only had one, though, and it's blue . . . so it matches neither of my bikes. Good thing I'm not excessively girly. (Although maybe this means I now have to go out and buy a nice new blue bike!! :D) NR, it looks like any ride on the NCR this weekend is likely to be a muddy slog . . . when are you going? |

I probably can't make it this weekend, though. Saturday is definitely out for me, and I will most likely have an out-of-town friend crashing at my place Saturday night. If not, though, Sunday is possible. |

Well, my bikes still haven't had their spring cleanings, so it would be no heartache to get them even dirtier. :)

Hmm, I found this in this mornings news feed:

I know this is frequented mostly by Baltimore area riders, but would anyone be able to help me with my first wheel-set build? I have everything apart from the tools. If there is someone kind enough to let me rent their truing stand/tension meter/dishing tool, I'd be grateful. I'd be willing to let you keep my bike ransom until I returned your tools and will definitely pick up and return your tools to your place.
Thanks, Ihsan |

Velocipede(bike co-op) has all the tools and experts. You need to volunteer a few hours to become a member. not exactly close to SS but is an option. I believe Thursday is concert in the park(WTMD event) I meant to say: 1st Thursday in the park Concert AND it is not until May 6...at least I didn't forget my helmet and water. Almost left my rain gear. http://www.wtmd.org/events_new/first_thursday.html |
