Thanks, I sent them and another co-op to find out suitable times.

Hey distance folks! This weekend I'm riding up to around Burkittsville for camping fun with non-bike friends. Sunny! Upper 70s! Anyhow, wondering what y'all thought about routes. Looking at either taking Old Frederick straight across, cutting west to the C&O (meeting it just down from Sugarloaf Mountain), or maybe just maybe catching a ride with a friend down to DC and riding all C&O up. Also, I ride straight-up road tires now and I'm not going to go out and buy cross tires before the weekend--is the C&O even advisable on skinny tires?

The Human Car 04-26-10 01:49 PM

I've done the C&O on 28mm and I think that is the skinniest you can get away with and even at 28 is a bit iffy.

EverydayElk 04-26-10 02:56 PM

What do you think about Old Frederick?

HC203 04-26-10 04:49 PM

I did about 40 miles on the C&O last June as part of a mini tour. I had endless mud from below White's ferry to Harper's Ferry. I was riding 32s with fenders and even that was a slip sliding mess with my fenders getting repeatedly clogged with mud. See if you can get info on conditions.

Old Frederick road is fine but no shoulder. Can have a lot of cars during rush hour but is fine for Saturday Sunday. If you must ride during rush hour I would take Frederick rd. It will have faster cars and more of them but has a big shoulder. It is also hillier than Old Frederick rd. You have ride on Rt. 40 for a short bit to access Frederick rd from Ellicott city. It is a short sprint, not too bad.

greaterbrown 04-27-10 08:08 AM

or leave the ride for a dryer day and ride the Monument to Monument Ride instead. :D

M2M ride: does this take us onto the new Met Brach trail? Seems a lot of it is ride-able, don't know how much

M2M is all pavement.

Thanks! Figure I'll be riding on it between like 11 am and 3 pm. . .

Also, here is a petition that One Less Car is circulating re: Mary Pat Clark's pro-bike bills in Baltimore City: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/ple...g-in-baltimore

I distinctly remember a mud bog on one of the trails. Maybe that was on the first ride down.

I had to check on it. We ride the northeast branch of the Anacostia trail

What I wanna know is... are you ready for M2M2M this year? Looks like brutal climbing up to the Boonsboro monument.

Haha, I would, but I have people meeting me up there. We're staying over a few nights.

I was thinking, "Wow, NR's bike looks like it's morphing into a 'cross bike!" :) Great pics -- I never realized North Point State Park was so pretty. I'll have to get up there with the bike some time.

balto charlie 04-28-10 06:26 AM

It was a chilly commute with lots of frost in C-ville. I was under-dressed....again.
Went to the western Balto co. bike-ped meeting last night. Met my kindred spirit, Richard Layman. He uses 2 bikes and the MARC train to get to work in Towson. Many folks in attendance. We were mapping out problem areas for walking and biking. Bicyclist seemed to be in agreement as to the major biking problems.

M2M2M....Bob's at it again. You could use the C&O canal for part of that ride or would that be too easy???

The Human Car 04-28-10 07:10 AM

The last time I tried to introduce a loop to the ride we came down the CCT and at first the Balto centric riders were like "What is this Copenhagen?" which quickly turned to "Dang, too many slow people on the trail."

I have been working on a variation of of that loop coming down Beach Dr in Rock Creek Park (they close the road on weekends and it's all down hill) but my first attempt the last 3 miles bombed so I sent Bob what I would try next to get to the Washington Monument from the Park, so we will have to see what Bob decides to do.

1fluffhead 04-28-10 07:47 AM

I think this is pretty self explanatory. Got it in a email from One Less Car this morning.

Downtown Baltimore here, Canton area.

Could I ask for suggestions on where to go to get a hybrid bike with internal gears.... I have tried several locations also performance bikes in Parkville..... they had one and I also bought that one, and that got then stolen last year after 2 months use..... they dont have that model anymore, so I am really looking to find another hybrid bike with internal gears.

Hope you can help.

Hi Soren,

I'd try Baltimore Bike Works on Falls rd. and talk to them about their Jamis hybrids.
Proteus Bicycles in College Park is great and worth the trip.

Also look through this thread http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=321805
It's a bit old, but I bet you can get updated models of these bikes.

Wow--a hundred+ more signatures since I looked at it this morning!

The Human Car 04-28-10 04:56 PM

Currently there are two on-line petitions running, one from One Less Car (395) and the other from the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee (362). Assuming no duplicates that's a lot of signatures! Also note the local bike shops have paper petitions as well, so things are looking good so far.

Trek760 04-28-10 11:35 PM

Hey everyone... just thought I'd drop in and say hi. It's been a while and as NoRacer can probably tell you... I have been extremely busy with KENDA Pro Cycling as their (pro bono) media and promotions director.

Now that summer is approaching and the guys are on the road at races I hope to be able to catch up with you guys on some rides.

Hope you guys are well,
Rick

NoRacer 04-29-10 05:06 AM

Yup! I see Rick's Twitter posts all of the time.

@Trek760 - so, is the bike gone, now? Are you going to come out this Sunday, May 2, for the ride from B'more to DC (Monument to Monument 2010 Edition)? I guess since you are in Gaithersburg, it may not be worth it to you to drive all of the way to the B'more Washington Monument and ride down to DC to the Washington Monument, then return to B'more.
