I went to a PA Bike Club all day conference in York PA as part of the BBC delegation. I left 2 AM to get to the conference on time. You would think that at that time in the morning I would have the NCR trail to myself but nooo, it must have been the opining of fishing season, lots of people out and about. I forgot how nippy 30 degrees is and I barely had enough layers on. Anyway it was fun day seeing how another state gets along with bicycle advocacy how how other bike clubs are getting along. I finally got to meet our LAB rep (Bill Hoffman,) really cool guy. It was strange for me to be in a 100% VC group and I will note that they were a lot cooler then most of the hard core VC advocates in A&S here. One thing that really impressed me was how many of the advocates there were both bike club riders as well as bike commuters even PA's bike/ped coordinator was in this category, that is something I think is seriously wrong in MD too many people that can make a difference don't because they see bicycling as one kind of thing.
Anyway 115 miles for me on Saturday and boy did I sleep well after that! |
Oh another item of interest:
The Civil War Century (Saturday, September 6) registration just opened up, remember registration is limited to 1600 and NO walk in registrations this year. http://baltobikeclub.org/index.pl/cwc If you would like to see more people on this ride we need more volunteers. FWIW a couple of us are riding out Friday and then camping overnight, volunteering Sat, and then ether riding home or camping again and then riding home Sun. All are welcome to join us for some or all of this. |
Thanks for letting us know about registration Barry, I just signed up my son and I. I'm really looking forward to it. That area is great riding territory. I will be doing 2 centuries in Sept. now. Hope to meet some BF members there. We will have to figure out a way to pick each other out of the crowd. Jeff

Is anyone here from the Three Lower Counties of the Eastern Shore? Somerset or Wicomico, mostly?

Good news! SB 492, which empowers the head of the Maryland Transportation Authority to authorize pedestrians and bicyclists to use MdTA bridges, has passed both houses of the Maryland legislature unanimously.

I've got a niece who is interested in bike riding, but she's kinda wobbly because of cerebral palsy and riding alone isn't quite working out. Have any of you with kids ever tried those bike-a-long things that attach to the seat post of another bike? I'm interested, but I'd love to test it out before making an investment.
I guess another option would be to put her on a tandem as the stoker. She's 7 1/2 yrs old. about 50lbs. Just fishing for options. (stuck at work on this beautiful day ) I'm living vicariously from all of the biking I can feel you all doing out there. Best -GB |

I try not to sit around, I'm afraid if do I'll rust away:) |

Anyone around Easton want to start up some spirited group rides from the Bike Doctor? They typically happen on Sunday morning at 8 AM and these next few weeks would be as good a time as any to get them going again. Looking at 30-50 miles and a 17-25 MPH pace.

Civil War Century
Thought I would add my two cents to the CW Century thread. In 07 I i did a double century weekend. The Indian Head century put on by the Oxen Hill club is the day after the CW century. It''s much more gentle terrain that the CW century and makes for a good recovery ride. Last year I bailed out of the CW ride at 75 miles but didi the whole Indian head the next day. This year I'll do both. Did a chilly sixty yesterday up to Hampstead.
Hey Barry, I've done that NCR ride from end to end. Check out my blog. http://web.mac.com/harrycampbell1/iW...Blog/Blog.html |
I did back to back bike clinics this weekend, not a whole lot of miles but it was great seeing so many trying to get into the sport and bike commuting. Three people could not even balance on a bike so I am going to try and do a separate clinic for that. And there is some interest on bike commuting that I will be helping out with as well.
For any lurkers interested in getting into bike riding it's not too late to get the benefit of Baltimore Bike Club's Instructional Series, just show up an hour before the ride start and someone will help cover what you missed. http://www.baltobikeclub.org/uploads...ries2008-3.pdf And if you missed riding Saturday feel free to kick yourself, that was some great riding weather! I ran into a friend and we did ~twenty miles riding around the city with a nice coffee break in the Hampden's. |

Aw, man, last saturday was another beaut during which I was indoors working. :(
HOWEVER, in the evening I did get a chance to tune up the NEW BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!! Hoolah-maloolah. I'm loving my new Kogswell P/R. Haven't done too much mileage on it yet, but she drives like a Mercedes. It's got this amazingly smooth acceleration and stable momentum to it. When you mash hard on the pedals the bike doesn't give all that power back to you immediately like a stiff roadie frame. The acceleration is almost like the power in a precision flywheel, it's there, but it takes the form of solid momentum, not snap. Anyway, no pics yet. I'll try to get some up later today. I do NOT have my lighting set up yet. The front wheel is built with a dynamo hub, and my lights are shipping from Peter White soon. However, I won't be going on my proposed NCR night ride this week. I'd really like to save it for a lighting test. One the other hand, I am thinking about riding up the NCR to New Freedom early sunday morning to ride the BBC ride originating from there. Then ride back after. It would be 20mi up, 60mi BBC ride, then 20mi back for an April century. Anyone interested in joining? Gimme a yell. -greater "hoolah-maloolah" brown |

Nice bike! For some reason it is telling me it wants a Brooks saddle too. ;)
Looking forward to doing the night ride with you. |
Greetings folks: been a while since I've posted. I haven't been doing much rec riding, only commuting. Weekend weather has had it good moments but usually not in tuned to my schedule. I was able to get in 40 last Saturday which was nice. A ride through Catonsville to BWI.
GB: did you ride the full moon last weekend? We need a report if you did. I was hoping to join you but had family obligations that night, thus my daytime ride. Nice bike by the way. I agree w/ Barry, needs a Brooks. A bunch of you guys are missing lately, hopefully y'all are too busy riding to post. Charlie PS The weather hasn't stopped me from brewing tho':) |
I haven't post for a while, I guess that makes me guilty of riding to much.
Who was on eastern ave saturday, wife saw someone with a pink jersey. Saturday I did 35 miles, again Rt 7 to Mountain Road, AVG from last time 15.5 to 16.1 this time, over 130 miles for last week. Also got my hands on some aerobars, Maybe its in my head but I am faster than ever, I can now average over 20mph for the entire ride home and was able do over 18mph into the wind for 7.5 miles. Looking to ride saturday, debating going north instead of east this time, maybe from Dundalk to Loch Raven Res. |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...trasburgRR.png ...but, I wasn't out there on my bike Saturday. I was on my way to the 72 mile ride with the BBC club down in Crofton to Chesapeake Beach. It could've been HC203--he just joined the team. I'm not sure where he was riding on Saturday, but I don't think he has a pink jersey, yet. |

And yes, you and Barry are right. My Kogswell is wanting a Brooks to complete that randonneur look. and the black and tan color scheme. I'm mighty comfy on my Terry fly saddle though. I couldn't get in my April century last weekend because the BBC cancelled due to rain. Time's running out though. I'm riding a kennedy Krieger ride for Autism research with my sister this sunday, so monday has got to be my 100mi day- rain or shine. Thinking about heading up to Gettysburg. Never been there. -GB |
Saturday morning--I'll be riding to Havre de Grace. I'm willing to meet anyone else interested in going at the Park and Ride on the east side of Back River Bridge. Start time is flexible, but earliest is 8:30am; latest is 10:30am (we'll be pressing our luck with the weather by then).
If I see no responses by 9:30am, I'll assume I'm on my own. Btw, I'm not representing any club. There is no cue sheet. This is a NO DROP ride, but please, no training wheels. You need to feel comfortable riding beside high-speed traffic as most of this ride will be on Pulaski Hwy/Route 40. Apology about the short notice. |
