Are you biking to the start? light rail? If biking we might be able to meet earlier and ride up.

I was assuming riding up on light rail which was why I put the start there. BUT, light rail doesn't start running on sundays till 11AM so I guess I'll be riding up.

Yeah, Charlie, I suppose it makes sense to meet you along the way. After looking at the area between us, it seems that maybe the Conservatory at Druid Hill is a good place again- where we met for the beer ride. 7:30AM meetup there? (I got your phone# and IM'ed you mine)

If anyone else is anyone else wants to hook up let's meet as a group at the Caribou Coffee in front of Hunt Valley Mall. Meet there at 8:30 and leave shortly thereafter. Ride is 54 miles. -GB

No way does he have a cell, it's gotta be his land line. You coming tomorrow? Looks like a lot of hills and miles on your legs today.

No, still feeling unrecovered. I originally planned to ride to Chesapeake City for 100 miles, but I think I need something flatter. I'm still looking for 100 miles, but with little climbing. Looks like it may be a ride starting in Delaware.

The Human Car 05-30-09 08:44 PM

I'll note that I will probably be helping Light Street Cycles move on Sunday (just down the street a couple of blocks on the other side of Light Street.)

Also worthy of note is at my Back to the Beginning Bike Clinic, Rob successfully road a bike with pedals for the first time in his life. So we have a brand new cyclists in our midst! Congratulations Rob!

Hell no. Charlie's got it right- I sent him my land line.
My friend Trevor might show.

Harry, Maxine, any chance we'll see ya?

I missed this one, obviously! I drove up to Pennsylvania Friday night and camped out; Saturday I rode the first-ever bike ride to benefit the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a beautiful preserve, straddling the Appalachian Trail, that is dedicated to the study and preservation of raptors. I grew up near there, and used to visit fairly often for hiking and bird-watching, but I never biked there.

The ride was billed as "75 miles to celebrate 75 years" of the Sanctuary. There were about 50 riders. We started at the Sanctuary, which is at the top of Hawk Mountain, and rode down into the valley, where a 25-mile loop was laid out, which you could do once, twice, or three times as you wished. I intended to do 75, but the route was just so pretty, I kept stopping to take pictures, and got too close to the cutoff time, LOL! So I just did two loops.

The organizers had posted a "Map My Ride" route and elevation profile, but the profile was waaaaay off! It showed the ride as mostly flat (which it was, in PA terms, anyway -- 2%-4% rollers, mostly.) One bump in the middle of the ride was listed as about 5%. It was in fact 14% at the worst, otherwise about 6%-8%, for a little less than a mile.

When you were done your loops, the organizers had a shuttle van that would take you and your bike back up the mountain to the Sanctuary if you didn't want to ride it. I had checked the elevation on the way down, and I knew it was 8%-11%, with a sizeable section of 13%-14% near the top -- and the total climb was 2 miles long. I had made it up and over the "bump" in the middle of the ride, but not without feeling like I was going to die , so I was pretty much figuring I wasn't going to attempt the last climb. But when I got there, I just thought "Oh, the hell with it, I'm not being driven up this thing, I can always get off and walk!" And I did make it to the top without walking (although I stopped twice for about 30 seconds each to stretch my back.) I should have timed it; it felt like it took forever! I was just crawling along, thinking "Don't look up, don't look up, don't look up . . ." :D

As I said, the route had beautiful mountain/farmland scenery, and it was virtually all tiny back roads with almost no traffic at all. (A lot of chipseal, though, but other than one short section, it didn't feel too bad.) Really a great ride. If they do it again next year, I'll go back.

I'll try to post some of my pictures, but I think they may be too huge.

RIDE CANCELED On Again/Off Again

Due to this AMs rain we decided to cancel the ride. If weather clears(should around 10) I will be going on a ride. Bob is out due to time constraints, I'll probably ride west/south side areas if anyone is interested. friggin' rain

Max: sounds like a nice ride. I use to go to Hawk mnt years ago in the fall to watch the raptors. Great place.

:roflmao2: I got in 85 plus a lot of miles due to being lost. I ran my route on google(odo still hasn't been replaced) and didn't include my lost parts. I rode parts of a very incomplete WBA trail. Got lost in Laham, old Greenbelt and a few other places. Don't think my lost time got me to 100 miles though but close. My legs were cramping around mile 60-70!!!! After a good LATE lunch they returned for the final push home. Glad I didn't bike a lot of hills.

So true.

No riding for me today. I really wanted to show off the new bike for Charlie, but the rain dashed that plan. Instead I finished my (extensive) review of the bike. I posted it in the Long Distance thread.

At least it wasn't like on May 22nd--same route, but at 19 MPH average:

Looked like it would have been a nice ride. I'll keep checking in and will ride with you guys soon. I did a triathlon on Sunday, my first, sprint distance, 500m swim, 15 mile (hilly) bike, 5k run.
All I can say is that I wasn't a DNF and there were still people behind me in my age group despite being totally unprepared for the swim. Doing laps back and forth in the pool is a hell of a lot different than open water with people swimming over you. I was depleted 100 meters in and had to backstroke a good deal but remarkable made it out of the water before a few others. My bike ride could and should have been better but I passed people on that too, and many unfortunate people with mechanicals.
My run was a slow slog but not a walk.

Penny from Light Street saved us on our second day of Ride for The Feast. Rain was coming down and she noticed that Evan and I were wearing trash bags. She came over and expressed concern over his safety, bag may get caught, and she offered up her really nice raincoat right off her back. I told her I would buy my next bike from her. I recall on my first Ride For The Feast in 07 she swapped out Ian's seat at 85 miles. She's the real deal. Joe from Joe's was also there, another great local bike rock star. Here's a rather incomplete blog from the ride.

GB Nice report on the Coho. Why don't you like the shifters? My Miyata was really disappointed she couldn't meet your new steed. She had on a new chain and completely cleaned drive train. Though the BB is starting to show some issues.

Because I lacked decent maps for my ride I rode all over Odenton using an old BBC cue sheet. It completely missed the N terminus of the WB&A trail and dumped me onto an old twisty bike path through an apartment complex. I should have printed out nbac route as he had it right. Bob you might want to incorporate it into your B'more to Chesapeake Beach cue sheet so you can take advantage of the trail.

I don't know the roads east of Rt3 but doubt they are bad.

FWIW: Rt3 is an uncomfortable ride(70MPH cars and even faster motorcycles) but it was better(had shoulder) than Rt 450. It went from 2 lanes and a shoulder to a narrow single lane no shoulder:eek: I was buzzed more times in that short section than the rest ride.

Yesterdays weather was perfect:thumb:.....after the rain.

Harry, site looks nice. You should be really proud of your son - thats a noble accomplishment.

Yeah... on the route that I mapped to Chesapeake Beach, I was worried about Rt 450. I've ridden on Rt 3 near Crofton before and found it tolerable. Like you said--big shoulder.

Hey guys, looks like you all have fun around Baltimore. My wife and I are moving up around the 18th, moving in to a supposedly terrible neighborhood near Johns Hopkins medical campus (Madison at Central). I'll be looking for a relatively relaxed city ride, not more than about 30 miles, just to get a feel for where people ride in the city. I don't have a job yet, so my schedule is open starting the morning of June 19. Happy to join in on a group ride, or I'll buy lunch if anyone else is bored on a weekday morning.

Thanks Ellen, NR-I am proud of him. He says he wants to do it on his own bike next year, now that would be an accomplishment, we'll see, not so much concerned about distance but rather bike handling skills.

Welcome gotcha. I normally have mondays free and would enjoy a ride around and about the city. Barry and Harry often have weekday free time too. Stay in touch.

Penny is one amazing person, her time and dedication to the Mayor's Friday Morning rides is unbelievable, showing up at the ungodly hour of 6 AM year round with bikes and equipment for City Hall staff who are in need and visiting parties who tour the city with the Mayor has done so much for this city and cycling. Not to mention those who are dedicated to do this ride year round (including our Mayor) puts many of our bike club members to shame.

Joe and his dedication and support of our racing teams is also amazing and I could go on with other bike shops as well but the point is we do have some amazing bike shop owners here in Maryland.
