Too bad I can't claim anything, retroactively, for the past 4 years of bike commuting to/from work. Anyway I wonder if its 5 days a week or its like some certain # of days you have to bike to work in a month. |

I've seen at least one ride on bikely that goes from Levering @ rt 1, past the thomas viaduct, and all the way up river rd going past where it appears to end on google maps and all the way to Bonnie Branch road. Question: Is this wise to attempt on a road bike or is it some kind of bushwack singletrack experience? I am thinking of trying it this week on my way home, but don't want to get all the way in and then turn around if it is not doable. |

Wait a second. Did I read that right? How can tire be both a tubular and clincher? Isn't that an "either/or" kind of thing?
Anyway, no, it's not an either/or situation. It's reality. It's a tubular tire with a clinch block built into the inner circumference of the tire.

Mmmm...the warmth of alcohol. :)
Got a route that seems right for the brew pub ride. Starts at the Conservatory at Druid Hill. (easy to park, close to Metro, easy to ride from, and hopefully more centrally located for everyone). From there we head west for our 1st beer in Ellicott City 2nd beer is at Charlie's in Catonsville and 3rd in Fells Pt at DuClaw. Then back to the start (if you parked there) or leave directly for home if you're headed to Essex or back to Catonsville. Metro and Light Rail are also not far. the route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/213201 |

As far as timing... Ellicott Mills doesn't open until 11:30AM on sunday. It's about 15mi away, so, I'd go for a 10:30AM push off time. How long at the pubs? An hour? Maybe I'll try it this way... 10:30AM push off (15mi) 11:30AM 1st drinks at Ellicott Mills 12:30PM push off (13mi) 1:30PM 2nd drink at Charlie's 2:45PM push off (9mi) 3:30PM 3rd drinks at DuClaw 4:30PM push off (6mi) 5:00PM back again Obviously, any of this can be compressed or expanded as we like. From Fells Pt., each of us can decide where and when to head out. Maxine, I live just around the corner from Druid Hill in Hampden. You are quite welcome to use our house as a changing station. If you want to bring your fresh clothes with you and leave them in the car, you could change (even shower, if you want) and then head up to Towson. No problem. psyched. :thumb: |

If you take Levering into the park on the HoCo side you have to cross the river to the BAlto side, turn left onto the Grist Mill Trail ride out of the park(towards Ellicott City), cross the Patapsco(cool bridge) to a left onto Illchester/River rd., then right onto Bonnie B. If you take Levering all the way towards Bonnie branch it will get single track, then it will be a carry regardless of which bike you ride, even a FS downhill. This is the trail that made me buy a mnt bike back in the mid 80'S. It was an old Grant Peterson-Bridgestone MB. Still have it today, though it is one beat up MF. I hope to restore it to a SS in the near future. Charlie
The other day I did ride partially through there, but I turned from river (levering side) to gun rd. I found I could take gun all the way to sulphur spring, go through the town of Arbutus, then joh ave, crossing caton ave, going all the way down the hill into an industrial area along Wilkens near the Gwynns Falls trailhead. I never went that way before, but now I have an alternative commute route to Baltimore! Though, at night, I might prefer to take wilkens into the city rather than the trail which is spooky. Here's the bikely link. |

Actually, we dodge ilchester hill completely. We'll ride a bit along the top flat section but, I took Charlie's advice and went up College ave instead. and that Lawyers Hill/gun rd. part I actually have never ridden. That section, also, is by Charlie's approval. If I ride my fixie, we'll be fighting for the oxygen inhaler. ;)

Our Nov. 2nd "Brew pub ride" goes right through Gun and Levering. Wanna come? -GB |
Josh and other interested parties,
Are we on for this sunday? Gotta get my October century in. The "Old Fred Spectacular" - Old Frederick rd from B'more to Frederick, MD and back. I'd meet you at the Dunkin Donuts on the north side of Old Frederick just outside of I695/beltway. 6:30AM? -GB |

Maybe the elementary school (Hillcrest) at Rolling and Frederick is best. double check the map location here: http://tinyurl.com/6huqm8 to make sure we're definitely talking about the same place. sunday looks to be good weather. -GB |

To bad for the crappy weather in Montgomery County today. Anyone got any rides going tomorrow?
I have to finish a project at work from 9-10am tomorrow so I am looking for a ride that starts after that. All the PPTC rides start before then :( . |

I'm planning on doing this ride tomorrow--got to be on the road by 6am:
http://www.dcrand.org/cgi-bin/weeken...?RIDE=20081026 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2008 "PILGRIMAGE TO PROSPECT PEAK," starting from SPRINGFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL (NOT the high school), 334 Sunset Avenue, Williamsport, Maryland. **NOTE "LATE" MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.** **Important note: The only store that we'll be passing before Berkeley Springs is a 7-11 at mile 3.9! Please have a good breakfast and bring enough snacks/fluids to carry you to lunch at mile 54.** This new and VERY SCENIC ride is a variation on some other rides to Berkeley Springs that we've done in the past. The first 41 miles are identical to "A Quad State Ride" but, in fact, this is only a two-state ride. We won't venture into Virginia before lunch nor will we climb up Tollgate Ridge into Pennsylvania after leaving Hancock in the afternoon. What we WILL do is head straight into West Virginia leaving Williamsport, eventually hooking up with Dave Berning's old 300K route along River Road through Cherry Run and Sleepy Creek. Then we'll detour south on Potomac Road, with several attention-getting ups and downs, culminating in the steep climb up to Highland Ridge. From there the terrain moderates significantly as we continue south. After enjoying the ridge-line views for several miles, a turn north onto Winchester Grade will head us toward the spa/resort town of Berkeley Springs -- oh, and it's DOWNHILL into Berkeley Springs! The best part is yet to come, as we pass Berkeley Springs State Park -- http://www.berkeleyspringssp.com/ ) -- and then turn west to climb up to Prospect Peak. The legendery (and reportedly haunted) Berkeley Castle will be on our right as we begin the climb -- http://berkeleyspringscastle.org/cas...ngsCastle.html. It's about 3 miles up a winding road to Prospect Peak, but well worth the effort. Not only is there a breathtakingly beautiful view from the overlook on your right -- http://www.berkeleysprings.com/trail/gwtrail-9.html -- but on the left is the Panorama at the Peak restaurant, where we plan to have lunch! -- http://www.panoramaatthepeak.com/index.html After lunch we'll enjoy the swooping descent back into Berkeley Springs, quickly catching our breaths before the grinding climb up to Horse Ridge (more fond memories of Dave Berning's old 300K brevet). The five miles along the ridge are delightful, the descent quick, and then we cross the Potomac River into historic Hancock, Maryland. If you're tired of all that climbing, you can finally relax, as for the next 10 miles we'll ride the FLAT Western Maryland Rail Trail east to the trailhead near Big Pool -- http://www.hancockmd.com/WMRT/info.html. You'll probably agree that 10 miles of flat/straight is more than enough. The last 25 miles through the rolling Cumberland Valley will provide welcome relief! |
Brown,
FYI I got home safely, I hope you did also, long story. After the kids go to sleep I'll do a ride report. Thanks, |
Sunday Ride report
Got up had a bagel for breakfast and met Bob at the school about 7am, weather on TV said 47 degrees, I brought a jacket and pants in case it was colder. Sure enough it was 37 degrees not 47. Thanks weather man! I only had the thin gloves and no balaclava. We descended into the Patapsco valley and my hands froze a quick stop at 7-11 for a hot chocolate took care of this. I then led us into a 6 mile wrong turn at Rt 27, no big deal we headed back and figured it out. Ride was VERY hilly kicking my but pretty good, but no climbs where I was under 10-11mph, not to bad. We get to main street Frederick and Bob gets a bagel, I do a few extra miles and meet him back, I then, needing something to eat get a yogurt? I know WTF was I thinking, I should have got a bagel or muffin, something with SUGER and CARBS!!!, This was only the beginning of some problems, Straight out of Frederick Bob got miles ahead, I think there was crack in his bagel! I went about playing catch up and somehow ended up on I70 for several miles, you’d have to see the turn to understand. I was going along and cars were whizzing past at 80mph and I’m hugging the line, scary. Finally I turn around again and Bob was nice enough to wait for me. I kept up with him pretty good for a while, then we started the hills again. He was gone again. Finaly at total mile #75 I hit 4.5mph uphill! I was beat, I saw another big hill and called this one in to the father in law. I then rested for 20 minutes, downed my last gel and managed to get in over 80 miles total.Pick up point was West Friendship volunteer. Best I can figure is I made some poor poor food choices, My suger/carbs had to low. I know I burned a ton of it with these hills, also should have had a bigger breakfast. Food 530am Bagel cream cheese, cup milk 830 gel 1000gel 1030 yogurt**********? Should have got a snickers, choc muffin or bagel 1100 granola bar 1230gel Plus 3-4 bottles water, I was hydrated good as I did have to go to the bathroom. We avg close to 17 out, by the time SAG got me my avg was 15.6.I estimate about 5000 feet climbing, the 100 mile PA ride was nothing compared to this constant onslaught. I got home about 230 and now still feel like crap. I had fun still, definitly would do again. Bob was cool to ride with also, def a strong rider. |
Josh, glad you made it back ok. I think you're right about your bonk being about foods. I definitely get cravings for sugary stuff, but I find you always get a longer steadier dose of energy with bready starchy foods.
This ride is just all rollers. Push downhills. Push uphills. Gotta keep up that momentum. After I got home my sister called and asked if I wanted to participate in this public art event on Federal Hill. "yeah, sure", I said. LOL !! It involved climbing up and down the front steep section of the hill. Oh yeah, and crabwalk too. I really can't believe I did that no more than 45 minutes off the bike. My legs are toast. Good ride though. 112 miles total. ~16 ave. BTW If anyone else does this ride they should definitely stop at the bagel shop on Patrick st., get a salt bagel with crystal-meth spread. It lasts for miles. :twitchy: |
