did anyone used it before?

Dirtbike 05-07-05 11:12 PM

....the hell?

Guest 05-07-05 11:18 PM

It looks too much like "Hannibal the Cannibal". I'd be freaked out to see someone wearing it!

Dannihilator 05-07-05 11:30 PM

Looks like the cheap man's full face helmet.

Raiyn 05-07-05 11:44 PM

I'd rather use this

em9ty 05-08-05 12:50 AM

haha....

J-McKech 05-08-05 12:58 AM

Is it an air filter or a face protecter?

Raiyn 05-08-05 01:05 AM

It's Jacques Plante's original goalie mask from 1959. At least that's what's in my picture. That other thing I have NO idea

J-McKech 05-08-05 01:40 AM

Good explaining Raiyn. So whats up with hockey, is it every coming back? I don't keep to much tabs on it but I do miss the violence.

mtnbiker66 05-08-05 06:33 AM

Is it one of those heat exchanger things?

troie 05-08-05 06:48 AM

em9ty, what are the chances of you typing a more descriptive title for your threads?

Guest 05-08-05 07:32 AM

It actually does look like an air filter or something. That wouldn't be so bad, but it would still creep me out. I'm slightly clausterphobic.

Why would someone want to wear their jock strap on their face???? Jeez, there's some sick bastids out there....

em9ty 05-08-05 07:41 AM

it's a filter...air filter...

Map tester 05-08-05 07:42 AM

More info on mask...

"The most versatile mask available, providing excellent filtration against most types of pollution a cyclist is likely to encounter. Uses a Dynamic Activated Charcoal Cloth filter to filter the worst of urban pollution. Also uses a Hepa-type filter to screen out sub-micron pollutants such as pollens and respirable dusts. Includes two Techno valves to allow easier exhalation, and releasing heat, water vapour and Carbon Dioxide from exhaled breath. Comes in two sizes, with a contoured shape for a good seal and comfortable fit and Velcro pads for easy application

Made from hypo-allergenic Neoprene giving a comfortable and secure fit. The filter is replaceable, and is designed to be effective for at least 1 month in normal regular daily use."

em9ty 05-08-05 08:48 AM

yeah..~~...that is the function~...

troie 05-08-05 09:28 AM

I guess none.

Longhorn 05-08-05 09:39 AM

I think it's sexy! Or maybe it's just the guy behind it! ;)

Maelstrom 05-08-05 10:36 AM

I would really hate to live somewhere that NEEDS that. I could imagine living in a place that needs air filters on your face and oxygen to buy in stores. Sounds like a creepy sci-fi movie I saw in the 80's where instead of water fountains they had air fountains, and air cost money and everyone needed a mask to be able to remotlely breath.

Guest 05-08-05 10:49 AM

I might get the mask for halloween. With some white pajamas and some straps on a board, I'd look just like Hannibal. :D

As far as I know they're working to get it going for next season. If they don't, I'm pulling my season ticket money (plus the 10% they tacked on as a thanks for letting them hold the cash). They have until the scheduled start of the regular season to get things done. I was going to give them until the end of the calandar year, but after seeing what a circle jerk the last few meetings have been they're losing time. They almost had a deal by the deadline to save the season and now they're back to square one? B***S***!

Have you tried scuba diving yet?

To answer your question...yes, sadly, I have used one before. I used to commute to work in downtown Toronto and found that I was coughing up a lung after a couple of months of riding. After using the mask for a couple of weeks it was no longer a problem though. Sucks (pardon the pun) getting used to riding with it as it is much more difficult to breathe. I agree with Maelstrom....but sadly sometimes you have no choice

I have two phobias- water and bridges. Scuba diving is not in my future. I barely can get over bridges.

Welcome to my ghetto. MEC sells them in Toronto, and some days, they are needed. (funny today is another smog alert day, now that you mention it).

Some riders I know who are mildly asthmatic have found they can go faster breathing through one of those some days, as it keeps the gunk out of the lungs. I briefly tried one myself and found that any benefits of less particulate were offset by reduced air intake through the hepa mesh, although it was better than I thought it would be.

I personally haven't noticed much problem with smog alert days....but they are increasing in frequency and severity here, so I may end up coughing up black tar at the end of the ride one of these days. Then maybe I'll wear one. Under the full-face.

Maelstrom 05-09-05 12:57 PM

Yeah I remember To...smog, heat and humidity. I dont miss it much. Used to go so far as Guelph (hometown)....just plain gross. With the milder temps and limited roads, people in bc don't know what bad smog is like, I just forgot :D

ghettocruiser 05-09-05 01:13 PM

Guelph?...I went to the UoG from '94 to 98, Mael, you ever ride back then with the speed river guys or the campus bike club? Good times, back in the day. And the trails there weren't bad for southern ontario. Sorry for drifting off-topic..

tkoziol 05-09-05 01:21 PM

Reminds me of scorpion from mortal combat....

I didn't ride back then, biking for me is new (3 or 4 years)...but I knew the group. I was good friends with the owner of bits and bikes and he wanted to get me into it pretty badly.

Guelph lake trails have grown from what I heard, even a shore trail in there :) Funny you went during the time I was still there. I used to spend a lot of time at the "ear", trash and Jimmy jazz...heck who I am kidding, I also spent a lot of time at molly blooms, woolich arms and even denim ...(1.5 beer nights), also that one watering 'hole' up by the church of our lady...kind of miss that scene, so many girls so little time :)

Sorry for drifting even more off topic :)
