Dumb question

Im a roadie and cyclocross racer and I want to do a few XC races this summer on my heavy-but-classic Bontrager racelite steel hardtail with a 1" Marzocchi Z3 circa 1998 that I hope I never have to replace. I put that detail in there either to invite expressions of jealousy, or derision for being a retrogrouch. Anyway my dumb question- are bar ends allowed in mass start XC races? Do I need to take mine off, or can I get something less dangerous like the short grips that stick in the ends of the handlebars? Want to find out before I get pulled off the line-
Thanks! And whaddya think about the bontrager? Race bike or museum piece?

Honestly? Museum piece. You said it yourself. It's heavy and you're running a 1" fork
