What I try to do to get better is work on cleaning trail sections that are at or just above my level of ability. If it bites me the first time, no biggie. If it really hurts me, I'll come back to it another day. Otherwise, I'll try something 5 or so times until I get it.
There are all sorts of great tips, including many above - but reading/hearing and learning are different. You've got to put the saddle time in and let your body figure out how to get you and your bike through the tricky stuff.
And that's what makes it so much fun.
