Trek 850
Hello mountain bike peeps! So I'm looking for a winter bike in the city, and I think I am going to get this Trek for $30 -$50ish. Anything you can tell me about them? This seems to be a reasonably well made bike and I'm sure I can't go TOO wrong for $50, but just wanted a second opinion.

I second your opinion.

At $30 to $50 buy it before asking any questions. MTBs make fine winter commuters once you get some fenders and studded tires.

Good to know. Guy accepted $30 for it. He says 'the gears need work', but everything looks attached and in one piece, I'm assuming a good cleaning/adjusting and maybe new housing will take care of any issues.
Thanks guys.

From the photo, the chain looks as though it need replacing, add the cable, and possibly tires, then you should be good to go (on the basis that the bike fits you)

What a score! Just got back with it. Everything needs adjusting and cleaning, deraillier seems fine but the rear click shifter seems busted. It's not pulling cable properly. I opened it up but i'm not sure what I'm looking at. No big deal...it's just one more part I can scavenge from my wifes bike she hasnt ridden in 10 yrs.
Tires are fine, chain works but should probably be replaced. And yea...it's a nice light frame. I havent ridden a mountain bike since I was a kid (actually around the time this thing was made), but this is way lighter than anything I ever had
Better still thouugh, I think I sold my Scattante road bike. He's on his way to take a look
Edit: A little bit of wd40 un gummed the works inside the shifter and it's working now 😊. Are the internals on these things supposed to be oiled?

If you're so inclined, you can remove them from the bike, disassemble and clean/lube everything, but a new set of EF-51 or EF-65 brake/shifter combos are only about $40.

Good bike. Make sure the crank is not one of the ones recalled by Shimano. The bike looks to be of that vintage.

Great bike, I've had several similar from Trek. That era of mountain bike made for a very versatile ride, vs modern mtbs, which are really offroad specific. I have a Specialized from that same time period right now, and my wife has a 930 and we use them both on roads and trails.
