Are you actually in down town Boston or outside of it? If so, which direction? Do you have access to a vehicle or are you bike mobile only?
A good place to start is New England Mountain Bike Association and search for trails. NEMBA has some great local knowledge and their forums are helpful. Another good place is Busted Spoke. Check out the forums there for some so so info.

I can't think of anywhere near you that allows to trail ride along a body of water. I ride primarily south of Boston and towards the Cape, so I'm not familar with good trail rides closer to your area, but I know there are plenty. I would use the search function at bustedspoke or message some of the guys on the NEMBA board. Many of them have loosely organized rides the are open to most anyone who wants to be shown around an area.
Sorry couldn't of more help, if you venture south of boston I can show you around Wompatuck.

Well it doesn't matter if there's water. The website says there's a trail in Newton so I will start from that. I should just go to the LBS here and ask for more info. They just close too damn early. Thanks btw, that was pretty helpful!
BTW, how south is the trail you are talking about? How far of a drive? Can you give more description.
I haven't done any riding for a long time. Today I rode to work, just a little over a mile and the cold air bit my lungs pretty bad. Why is it so cold here! I rang my friends back in Michigan and they were enjoy their day at 70F.

Here are some directions to Wompatuck
I'd say google's time estimation is pretty close, 45min to an hour each way, depending on traffic. You can also check out the state's Wompatuck site (it's a state park) here. There is a link to a trail map on that page as well which you'll need, pretty big area that you can get lost in if you get disoriented.
What kind of riding to you do and how long to you usually go time or distance wise? XC, freeride, dh,? I ride XC mostly with some fun stuff thrown in i.e. some singletrack downhills, and anything technical that I don't crash or more likely wuss out of.

12~15 miles will be nice. I don't do anything extreme, it's more for the enjoyment than fun. I just like to be out there, and sometimes stop for some photographs. I'm a pretty slow rider, probably because I am far less fit than what I am supposed to be. I can't say I am very experienced either. I ride on the road more often than on trails. Nothing exciting, sorry!
