Looking for Cheap Mountain Bike

Hey new to this forum

I'm looking for a relatively cheap mountain bike, I saw one in Halfords, the Carrera Hellcat which looked pretty good and I also saw Mongoose Fireline Dirt Jump.

I don't really want a full on MTB, so the Mongoose looked like a good option but I'm not convinced because I'm 6 ft so any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Marin Muirwoods.... a cheap and durable urban 29er - and still rugged enough to go off-road with.

In the 27.5" department, Raleigh Redux looks like the ticket.

My first MTB in the old days was a rigid Gary Fisher Aquila. What is old is new again.

The OP is looking at dirt jumpers and you follow with commuter bikes. This ****ing place is awesome.

OP, you are going to have to make up your mind. A dirt jumper will not work as well to ride around, but will last longer if you are doing jumps/stunts.

Read the OP more closely. He said he wasn't interested in a 'full on mtb' which I took to mean that he wouldn't be using it for actual mountain biking.

They are looking at ****ing dirtjump bikes. That suggests the OP wants something closet to BMX, nothing in that OP to indicate they want a commuter.

When you asked the OP what his intentions were for the bike, what was his response?

The OP defined what they meant by "not quite a mountain bike" when saying that the Mongoose Fireball DJ meets that "not-a-mtb" definition.

That is one possible interpretation. Myself and the other posters interpreted it differently, obviously. Why so snippity about it?

I want something that isn't hard to ride around on the street but not hard to do some basic rough slope stuff for mtb

Exactly why I recommended the Muirwoods/Redux - a rigid urban MTB is just what you need to ride around the street with and you still have the option to ride basic off-road trails with it.

Something good to ride on the street won't survive long doing slope stuff.

The commuter bikes that other guy recommended would probably snap in an afternoon of slope style jumps. Like I told you, you are going to have to compromise. A dirt jumper with gears won't be too bad to ride around town. You may have to get a new seat post, so you can get proper pedal extension.

And everybody else should try to figure out what slope style mountain biking is before recommending bikes. Bikes that are twice the budget of the OP too...

From: SF Bay Area, East bay

Bikes: Miyata 618 GT, Marinoni, Kestral 200, Soma double cross 2002 Trek 5200, KHS Flite, Koga Miyata, Schwinn Spitfire 5, Mondia Special, Univega Alpina, Miyata team Ti, Santa Cruz Highball, Waterford rs11

Cheaper usually means heavier. Not best for street riding. I'd think you'd be happier with the Hellcat and some all terrain tires.

Ummm.... If this place is so ****ing awesome maybe don't be such a ****** and it will improve. Mamma always said "If you don't have anything good to say shut the f*** up!"

If your on like a 700-750dollar budget buy the diamondback hook its really easy to use and its rigid and light enough to ride street or hit the trails.
