Commuter Bike

I am looking to purchase a commuter bike for a 10 mile (each way) drive to work. Locally, I've seen bike stores that offer Trek and some that offer Raleigh bikes. I know absolutely nothing of bikes, but have the money to purchase something nice and do not want to worry about it breaking down, falling a part, or having any mechanical issues; in other words, I would like a well put together, reliable bike. I do know that I like the gear shifters to be separate from the handles, but i think that those only apply to cheap bikes from stores like Walmart. I am interested in the Carbon and if I should go that route over aluminum.
