Hey, I am finally buying some clipless pedals and I have narrowed it down to the eggbeater c pedals in this combo

I would buy a pair of cheaper shoes with these. about 35 dollars

I am trying to spend as little money as possible so if these two are comprable I would assume go with the cheaper one. These are going to be my first clipless and I am looking for the best that I can possibly get for my money. Thanks for your help

Eggbeaters are pretty much the most popular clipless pedal out there. Most riders like them because of their 4-sided entry (as opposed to 2-sided) and their excellent mud-shedding ability.

I'd say go with the eggbeaters.

my only concern is that with the eggbeaters I will always need to be clipped in. what about the times that I don't want to be changing shoes or better yet, the times that I don't feel safe being clipped in. What would I do if I was going over something challenging that I was afraid of falling on and didn't want to be clipped in for.

You'll get used to being clipped in over challenging terrain. And of course, you can unclip and and still have your feet on the eggbeaters pedaling.

As far as riding with regular shoes on clipless pedals goes... I don't ever do it because it's hard to pedal this way! I always switch out my pedals to platforms if I ever need to get somewhere where I'd need regular shoes.

If you don't want to switch pedals, there is the Crank Bros Mallet C pedal. It can be used with or without clipless shoes. However, it is fairly expensive compared to what you've already linked. https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5240

I have the ritcheys. They are my first clipless pedals and Ive enjoyed them a lot. I havent experienced any problems getting in/out of them. And I dont have any problems in muddy or wet weather either, just a quick kick on the pedal and it clears up enough to clip in. Based on my experience I wouldnt have any problems buying these again. I dont have any experience with any eggbeaters so i cant really compare.

How are the ritcheys for use as a platform if you aren't clipped in?

Use the plastic clip-in pedals the bike shop installs for test-rides. I think someone makes a similar product for just what you're talking about, sold seperately of course. You limit yourself to one-sided entry, but it's not that difficult. I don't know what the quality of the Answer Speeder shoe is, but that's a good price for a pair of shoes and a pedal. You can also check out the Candy C pedal - I've never seen it priced this low.

They actually still work pretty well if you arent clipped in. I commute with these pedals and sometimes Ill ride down to the 7-11 at lunch time with my Vans on, I wouldnt ride too far like that on the trails but theyre definitely stable.

How easy would it be to put on the eggbeaters and then change to platforms every once in a while? Ive never messed around with my pedals so I dont know how easy this would be to do or how long it would take

I'm currently using the eggbeater mallets on my bike. I can unclip and still have a solid platform. I can also ride for short distances with regular shoes (as long as the soles are somewhat rigid). I put chome eggbeaters on my road bike and now can get away with the same shoes for both bikes.

Used both, went back to the Ritchey V3.......did not like the float and release of the eggbeaters

Man, for $25 what the heck are you waiting for. I was gonna buy some new cleats but for that price i might as well have a pair for my road bike.

I would just buy the Ritcheys because they are cheaper but it really only comes out to 10 or 15 dollars more to get the eggbeaters once you factor in the price of shoes(40 w/shipping)........... I hate decisions......although I think I may be leaning towards the eggbeaters

I just put the Ritchey's on my bike, never used clipless before. They are cheep, and very easy to get out of. Just sitting in my living room practicing I found myself falling over a couple of times and each time, even in rushed semi panicked state I clipped out no problem. Road to work in them this morning and I am starting to like them a lot already. I dont know about the egg beaters but the Ritchey's also seem to have a comfortable bit of play to them as well. Of course I have only been on them twice so...

Go with the Beaters. If you don't feel confortable with no platform get the Candys.
