I was going to ask that too.

Although, on reading the question again he is actually asking what 'you' think the best dually for under 3k is and not what $3,000 bikes we would reccomend for him.

I will through this one out.
Stumpjumper FSR 120 expert disc lists $2,600
pretty good specs for list price
https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkM...keTab=techspec

mmmmmmm.......Fox Talas and Juicy Sevens.

The wheels suck a bit but the rest is pretty decent.

See my choice would differ because I prefer XC race bikes. So in my opinion for $3,000 I would go for a Santa Cruz Blur XC. Either that or check around for a used Ellsworth Truth.

Actually it is a Fox F100 RLT. Pretty nice fork ($650 retail). It is actually a pretty good price on a nice bike.

Late last year, I carried $3K cash to a bike shop to buy a bike for my daughter. After tried several bikes, she picked a Schwinn mountain bike. The price was really really good. Here are the break down of the cost:

Schwinn 16" pink girl mountain bike (Shimano equipped) $95
Barbie pink helmet $20
Barbie pink knees and elbows protection pack $15
Disney bell $7
Cinderella bike bag $12
A set of shinny hairy things hanging on both ends of the handle bars $8
Flashing LED light mounted under the saddle $9

I still have the rest of the money for beer.

The dirtbag sounds and looks great, but its actually quite heavy, and has a cheap paintjob. FUNN parts are really heavy, but cheap. Its a Single Pivot, and suffers from Brake Jack. I dont think anyone makes a floating brake for it either.

Yes, I have ridden one (friend owns one) and it wouldnt be my first choice.

I know a lot of folks around here don't like Cannondale, but I've moved from a Jekyll to a Prophet and love it. I think the 2000 is just a bit over $3000, but the 1000 is about $2000. With the extra money you save, you could do some upgraes. Anyway, here's a link to some of the press about the bike: https://www.cannondale.com/bikes/media/prophet/ . I will say, however, that it's whatever feels best to you. I love my bike, though I realize there are others out there that are just as good. From my initial research I've found Trek, Giant, Specialized and Cannondale to be "right up there" when it comes to frames/components. But it'll be your bike and you should just go out and test ride and buy what feels best to you.
