GT DHi race 2001 (?) - help needed

Hi folks!

I'm working on restoring this bike for the bicycle museum nearby:

[here should be the photo of the bike, but I don't have permission to post photos on this forum yet. It's white, with blue and red stripes. I hope to be able to add photos later].

I believe this to be a GT DHi race, possibly from around 2001. Aside from the frame, I got the fork, the rear shock and the headset which are original (or at least were donated with the bike), the rest was gathered around the museum's vast warehouse. I would like to know as much as possible about the bike's history: the exact model year (I realize I should probably supply the serial number, will do so later today), how many were made, whether this could be the original paintjob (I couldn't find any online in these colors) and the exact specs, as well as any tips on restoration. Any help is much appreciated!

I would recommend getting involved with the forums here. Get 5+5 posts and you will be able to post pictures. Since you are helping out a local Bicycle museum you will be a welcome participant and we would love to see photos, at least I would. I really really really hope you get involved here it is a fun forum and we have a whole classic and vintage section with some amazingly knowledgeable people which could come in quite handy for some stuff you may be working on.

I sadly know almost nothing about GT DH bikes. I know Dave Tiemeyer at least made track frames for GT for a period of time. I think he probably did other stuff for them especially on the road side but may have done some MTB work as well?

I have a 1997 GT STS DH so this DH bike interested me. I did some google searching and found your thread from another forum.
I haven't seen another in that color scheme. You may get some good info by joining this FB group. I could post there if you don't want to join the group.

Thanks veganbikes for the warm welcome, and Desert Ryder for reposting the photos!

I examined the frame some more. First of all, the serial number is AS40100739. I'm not sure whether it fits the scheme posted on behalf of Dan Garcia on various forums. I guess it can be interpreted in that vein, with AS being the code for the factory (which one would that be?) 4 is the month of April, and the manufacture year of 2001 seems to make sense. Is it reasonable for a factory to make 739 frames by April? I don't know.

"BI 1313" appears next to the serial number, and I'm not sure, but perhaps it's the code of the model?

Also, there's plenty of stickers there, to wit:
- Multiple various "DHi race" decals
- A RaceFace sticker
- Mutliple "Free Agent" stickers
- A Maltese cross
- A Jagwire sticker

I hope some of those might shed light on the history of this bike.

Another group that may have answers would be this one:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/GTLSRXOC
"Welcome to the first and only dedicated organization for the 1992-2001 GT LTS, LOBO, DHi, STS, RTS and XCR Mountain Bike."

Most content is LTS and STS but it does include the DHi series.
