Like skiing, its always better to chase someone faster than you. You get to max yourself and improve more quickly.
When i used to ride, i would sometimes get to ride with a guy who lived up the road. He was older, had a nicer bike, and was very good. Some of my best rides were with him because i had to push myself just to keep up. Thats how i improved.

My 14 year old's favorite thing to do at a race where nobody knows him is to let all the other riders think he's just another kid with an expensive toy checking out the mountain bike race scene.... Then he proceeds to whup 'em, as he's been racing xc since 2000!
Seriously, though, ride alot. Ask questions. Practice, practice, practice.

In case you haven't gotten the gist of the answers yet: RIDE RIDE RIDE.
And: NOBODY CARES THAT YOU'RE A NOOB.
Hells, I've been at this for 2 years, and ask free_pizza, I'm a riding joke half the time! Don't bug me though, I just love riding, despite how much turf I eat. (Some turf is tasty too...peaty...like good scotch)

If they care "how" you ride, then you don't want to hang with them anyway. I recently met a guy who races mtn, cyclocross, and road, and he invited me out to ride with them. I was like "dude, I am totally out of shape, you will be bored to death riding with me", and he was like, "so what, I ride with all types of riders, it doesn't matter". So don't worry about it.

I've been doing a lot of solo riding and obstacle practice on my own with borrowed bikes, but I'm just fishing for suggestions and words of encouragement from you folks.
Thanks

Well heres my word of encouragement, I can also be considered a noob but I trained hard for 3 months and when I join my cycling group I was happy (Cyclist are all friendly people) My first ride was horrible, i felt like regretting joining them cause i usually cycle 3-5km but not uphill 5km or more. Anyway ride after ride i started to improve A LOT. And now I learn new skills and I can pedal uphill quite fast. And my stamina has improved a lot. My point is everybody starts of as a noob but after a time, that noob could be better. ^^ Hope this helps
