I have some Shimano PD M 324's that I"ve used for about 3 months that I'll sell you with cleats for $35 shipped. I can get a pic of them if you want. They are in perfect shape. Here's what they look like. The reason I"m selling them is I bought a set of Time Z pedals.

Bear in mind that just like a hybrid style bike, a pedal that's designed to do both will do neither very well.

Besides, the Launches with cleats mounted will only cause problems if you try to use them on platform pedals. I would go with one or the other for now and save up your pennies.

What? I have been using both the M324 and M424 and I have no idea what you are talking about. The pedals work well both with cleats and in street shoes. I can't comment on the shoes.

The biggest pain is getting the pedal on the correct side and getting clipped in.

They worked great but now I need clips on both sides.

Mine are mostly in the right place, but I'm fixing to replace the 324s with 424s that you can either clip in or use a platforms on both sides. A little less platform area, but not bad.

Note that the 424's have pop-up bindings. They are not as easy to pedal like a platform because of that. I have the 545's (just like the 424s but a metal cage) and do not like to use them as platforms. They work great clipped in but not as platforms. I would stick with the 324s or better yet go clipless all the way.

This may be true for recreational, commuter, or as they're called in the link you posted, "campus pedals." For serious mountain biking like revmonkey aspires to, there is no clipless pedal that will function even as well as a cheapo dedicated platform pedal when ridden in non-cleated shoes.

Yup. I got Mallets thinking that I can ride the platform without cleats, but it turns out that it has absolutely no grip and the clip mechanism in the middle bulges out. It's better to get two pedals, one for clipless uses, and one for platform uses.

Or you could get some of those plastic spd platforms that you could clip into one side of a double sided pedal. Then nothing bulges out of the side that the platform is clipped to. Then you have both platform and clipless.

That's what I was wondering: does no company make a pedal with one side which has some really grippy 12 pins (for example) in it and the other side is simply where you clip in, no pins, no nothing, designed only for clipless riding.

Yep, they do, I have a pair. Sorry I can't tell you the brand or anything though. I found em at an end of season clearance sale. So they are out there somewhere.

Cool, don't worry about it, I think I'm sticking to platforms for now anyway.

Interesting Topic this, I am going through this right NOW.

Heres my scenario, used straps for a long as I can remember. Needed new shoes for racing so decided to go the clipless route(I already have two sets of clipless SPD pedals that came with my bikes). Crap those SPD pedals scare me. I have already fallen over a couple of times, so I would like the opatunatey to ride not clipped in. I am currently using the Shimano M520 and have got this little plastic platform(came with the peadls) clipped on the one side. The work ok, although the platforms could be a bit bigger. So I decided to order the Shimano M525. These pedals look cool and strong, they seem to get alot of different results at MTBR.com anyway hoping to get them on Wednesday.
