Do they not want you getting a new bike at all or just won't pay for one? That would suck and be kind of dumb if you couldn't even buy one with your own money

If your really tight on money and want to buy a new bike you can always check out Sportcheck (I know its not a LBS but its good enough for a beginner) They carry Ironhorse and you should be able to find a good deal. If you do go there don't look at anything that doesn't say Ironhorse on it cause the rest is crap.
