Bike rack for Hummer
hi everyone...
anyone know of a bike rack (hitch mount or spare tire mount) that will fit onto a Hummer H3? I have tried the Thule Spare Me, but it doesnt fit my 33 inch tire (the cradle arms do not extend all the way up since it is hitting the top of the tire), even though I was told by a Thule rep that it would fit . As anyone here used a Thule or Yakima hitch mounted bike rack on a H3? I already spoke to representatives at Thule and Yakima. One at Thule (NOT the same person that said the Spare Me would fit) said that the Hitch Post Pro will not clear the spare tire and that they actually do not have bike carriers (hitch mtd or spare tire mtd) that will fit an H3 unless the spare tire was removed. They also do not recommend using a extension for the hitch. One rep at Yakima said that he was not sure if their racks would clear the spare tire either.
However, I would like to know if anyone has tried it successfully. I want to make sure that it can clear the spare tire with no problem before purchasing one. I plan on riding some trails in Jim Thorpe, Pa next weekend, which I hear have awesome trails.
Thanks for your help!

Who needs a bicycle with a Hummer? Just drive where ever you want to go, over anything in your way.
Have you looked at Saris racks? They might have something for the mighty Hummer?

Sportworks T2 (now distributed under the Thule name) might work - I can measure this evening. How far past the end of the receiver does the H3 spare tire stick out?

here's what you do. you load your bike into your h3. you drive your h3 to the hummer dealership. you take your bike out of your h3 and put it into an h2. if it fits with room for your fiance's bike, buy the h2. if it doesn't, try the h1. that should hold your bike, your fiance's bike and 15 of your closest friends' bikes.

Why do they not recommend a hitch extender? That would've been my suggestion, along with perhaps some ratcheting tie down straps in case having the extra segment made the rack a little unstable. Or GM's engineers could get a clue and suspend the tire under the rear of the vehicle.
Somebody makes a rack designed to bolt onto the spare tire of motor homes and suv's, but I can't remember who.

Hmm.....
My 11 year old hatchback can take two fully assmbled mountain bikes no problem, while a bloated and overweight SUV can't. Go figure

It is ironic, isn't it. Since Hummers are marketed for their supposedly outdoorsy, athletic appeal, i think this is something the dealer and manufacturer should address, and I hope you complain to them both.
Meanwhile I don't see why you shouldn't get some kind of hitch extender for a bike rack, if they exist...it might not be a good idea for towing a camper or boat, but a bike rack is pretty light compared to that.

ride the bike instead of the h3?
::edit:: that would make too much ecological and economical sense...my goodness...you might be branded (GASP ) socially responsible.!!

I saw a H3 at the race yesterday with a hitch rack. I meant to check it out to see what it was but ended up getting too busy. I imagine he will be at the race this coming weekend (if he can afford the gas). If he's there I'll try to check it out.
