Winter clothing?

What clothes do you wear that are warm enough for cold weather but are also comfortable/ practical for riding?

I use my bibs, insulated tights and occasionally a second layer of tights. I just use my regular cycling socks plus a pair of booties or two pairs of booties over the shoes. For my upper body I wear one or two base layers, a jersey of some type plus a jacket. I also wear something on my head plus my helmet and a helmet cover. That allows me to ride on the road down to around 15 degrees, I imagine that would allow me on the mountain bike down to around 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Like everyone else said, just layer your regular riding clothes. Over the winter, I went riding when it was -20C and below (but we had a mild winter this year so it wasn't like that very much) and the main things I had to worry about were my hands and feet. But with a good pair of gloves and shoe covers with wool socks, I was warm throughout the whole ride. Getting too hot can be an issue too so when selecting your layers you have to consider the riding conditions (how much snow, wind, trail) and how long you intend to ride.

You might want to check out the commuting forum and winter biking forum. Keeping your ears/face, hands and feet warm is paramount, but you can get away with a regular cycling jacket over your regular gear most of the time. I wear a PI Ballistic jacket down to about -20C with just a t-shirt underneath, then I slap on a long-sleeved mid-weight underwear layer for anything down to about -25C. If you're still out and about past that, or there's serious windchill, top everything off with a windproof shell. Don't overdo it, sweating a lot will soak your clothes and you will get chilled rather quickly. It's better to start out a little cool and let yourself warm up from riding.

As never mentioned, this past winter was pretty wimpy, but there were some days in November where I was out in -26C with windchill at -35C. I had big mitts, wool socks, two balaclavas, headband, Gore-tex tights, nylon shants and the aforementioned top layer on. I was cursing a lot for the first few minutes, but I started to warm up my core after a little while.
