FOUND in neighbors trash!!!

I found this in my neighbors junk pile that was going to the dump!!

It is a 1988 Shogun Prairie breaker Team Issue and from what I can tell was top of the line back then. It is in ok shape. The picture was taken after a quick wash. I am currently removing parts and degreasing them. I was wondering what is good for removing rust? I did have to cut the seatpost as it was stuck. It was set for someomne well over 6 feet. It is a nice ride and still lite for todays standards. There is some rust on the frame and I am not sure how to go about removing the rust from the frame and then repainting the area. I want to try and preserve the original paint as musch as possible for obvious reasons. Any Sugestions?

Actually the picture makes it look to be in better shape than it is. It does ride well. We had a day where aour garbage company picked up whatever you put out and that is how I found it. I was taking out my junk and it was sitting next door.

if youre just going to repaint where necessary, then why not just sand off the rust?

Nice bike !

I have the same 6 speed group on my converted Kuwahara mtb to touring bike. Changed those concrete rubber brake blocks to coolstop, and had to swap the biopace chainrings because they did funny things to my knees. A Tange Prestige frame is high on my most wanted list. Sweet.

I decided to sand off the rust and use fingernail polish to touch it up. Wont be the best but better than nothing. I figure it will look better than if I were to strip it and repaint it myself. I am lousy....
I figure $200 to repaint it might as well turn into a new bike as I can get something comparable for not much more. The way I see it, this has been sitting in the bushes for years and all the components still work!!! I will get more years out of this, if I take care of it, than a new $300 bike. It rides well and obviously was built well.

The sand paper and nail polish is the best way to go.

that it then. I sanded the rust and applied a coat of clear primer/rust treatment. I am just going to focus on the rust and not so much the small chips. I think it will turn into a nightmare since the main goal here is to make it last as long as possible and I am only using it for trail riding. It would be nice to have it look really good, but it wont make it ride better.

I sanded the rust and applied some touch up paint. I decided against fingernail polish. The paint was only $2 for a small bottle which I brushed on. It looks ok, just ok. Better than rust and chips. The red and black were dead on match, I got lucky. The white was a but whiter. The original was almost a cream color. Now I have to figure out how to touch up the large "Shogun" logo. Enough is there to fix it if I am patient and take my time. It almost looks like I could buy sticky letters and just put them on. It is a pretty generic graphic. I thought of taking a picture on my digital and fixing it in photoshop then printing a clear decal then clearcoating it. I am not to sure how well that will work. I had to apnt over the top of the fram that says " Prairie Breaker Team Issue". That one will have to be done as a decal as mentioned. Has anyone had luck with printing a decal on a computer as above? One problem is that the logo is white. Anyone who prints knows you cant print white. So again... Any suggestions?

Bikes: Cinelli Unica, BP Stealth, K2 Razorback, Steel Bianchi roadie, Bianchi Super GL, Specialized Stumpjumper, and 3 beach cruisers

Print it out on clear stuff, cut out the letters with a blade, and use it as a stencil. Just tape it to the frame and paint over it.

Sweet find!

I pulled an old kids Hardrock out of my neighbor's trash after they moved to India! Did a pretty sweet rebuild on it!

People throw away some crazy stuff....
The stencil idea sounds good but with my luck it will run under the stencil

I found a picture of the graphic and cleaned it up in photoshop and here is what I came up with. This will be in black as the picture so I think I can go with a clear decal printed with my computer. I have never done it this way, but I figure I can cut the decal down, stick it on, then clearcoat it to keep it on. Does this sound like the right way?

That bike looks great. I think a repaint would be a bad idea. need to preserve these older bikes.

I tend to agree. Unless the paint is in super crappy shape, or the color is whack (my 89 trek 7000 is off white/sea foam green!) I would leave it alone. A rattle can job is never that great anyway, unless you have mad rattle can skills...

I will be sure to post a picture when I am done. I am only going to touch up the paint to eliminate more rust. It will look the same just without the rust and chips. I am not using a can...no way. It wouls lokk like a 5 year old did it.

But you could do a nice camo pattern with a few cans of krylon.
