I need some advice....
Hey guys, next year I'm planning on moving out to Montana and I'm looking at getting a mountain bike. I'm looking at the Rockhopper and the Hardrock and was wondering which one would be better for the type of riding I'm going to be doing. I'll be doing both cross-country and downhill. I was thinking about the Hardrock because that looks like it has a tougher frame than the Rockhopper or would the RH work better? If anyone has any other advice for XC/DH bikes that'd be great(keep it under $1000).

Rockhopper. I dont think you can rig a xc AND dh machine because xc bikes have like 80/100mm travel and dhs have like 140mm+. But anyways... I think RH has better components and more xc style than HR.

Well, I'm wondering if the Rockhopper will hold up to some downhill abuse because it doesn't look as solid as the Hardrock does.

they are both A1 premium aluminum, double butted, externally machined headtube, so.... same wielding. if you read their website, the RH is for 100mm travel fork and HR can probably handle higher travel fork better.
what do you mean by downhill? going down trail hills or... real downhill?

I'm was in the same boat as you are now. I was looking at the Hard Rock Comp Disc, Rock Hopper Comp Disc and an Iron Horse Quantum at first. I narrowed it down to the HR Comp Disc and the IH Quantum, but then I kept looking around and reading a LOT. I ended up looking at the Hard Rock Pro Disc because I also thought it looked beefier than the RH. My mind was made up. I just ordered it this week and it should be here within a week. I really like the SRAM X7 shifters and RD as well as the Avid BB5 disc brakes. My lbs gave it to me at $599, a pretty good deal. Just glad I kept looking.

The Rockhopper will handle begginer's downhill fine but its still rough and you'll definitely need new tires, the fork is fine, despite being 100mm it can handle the abuse of downhill fine... just try not to be so careless, hardtails are not forgiving on errors, especially not on a downhill.
