Specialized Hardrock...What's one worth?
Was at a friends house yesterday and I saw a couple of bikes sitting in the corner of his garage. I looked them over and then asked him if he'd sell one of them. He said he probably would but didn't know what he wanted for it. He said it was "about a $500 bike".....whatever that means. I know absolutely nothing about what this thing might be worth but it was a Specialized and it said Hardrock on the downtube. Pretty sure it was an all cro-mo frame and fork, although it seemed very lightweight when I picked it up. I'm guessing it's 5 or 6 years old. It has the old style bar mount. The bar itself has a slight rise to it...not totally flat. It was painted gray if that rings any bells. I did not notice what components it had on it. Looked a little rusty in spots but nothing serious. Just needs some cleaning and TLC and I think it would make me a decent bike. Anyone got any idea what this bike might be worth?? Don't want to offer him $200 if it's only worth $50... THANKS!!

Really!!?? It's only worth 50 bucks?? WOW, I figured it was worth more than that, and HE sure acted like it was worth a lot more than that.

Alot of people who paid $500 a few years ago always seem to think their bikes are worth alot more than they are. New technology has caused bikes in general, and mtn. bikes in particular, to depreciate really fast.....tom

I have a '97 Hardrock that I salvaged from a friends trash pile when he was moving. I think Hardrocks were priced between $250-400 in '97. I'd say $50 is a fair price, especially given t he rust. Mine's in pretty good condition with no rust and I converted it into a single speed and I'm very happy with it. Even so, I wouldn't expect anyone to give me over $100 for it.
