Thompson stem conversion to 25.4.

Anyone use a shim to convert thier 31.8 Thompson X4 stem handlebar clamp to 25.4? Is it safe? I want to keep my Monkey lites for sure!

Why don't you just get the 25.4 stem?

i don't see why it would be that big a deal as long as there are no sharp edges on the shim...which would apply to other handlebar materials as well.

bikeparts.com has the shims

Santiago thanks for the suggestion, but like so many on here who answer Qs u have failed to do ur research. Thompson doesn't make an X4 stem in 25.4 only 31.8.
https://www.lhthomson.com/elite_x4_sizes.asp (How do u hyperlink here?) Anyway, thanks for the response. I guess what I was wanting was an opinion from someone who had a bad experience with a shim. I'll look at Bikeparts.com. Thanks again.

Yeah! We all sit around with bated breath just waiting for the opportunity to do peoples' research for them.

Furthermore, Santiago didn't give you a suggestion, he asked a qualifying question - in other words, well, he was doing research.

Good luck with your skinny little handlebars. I hope they don't break.

Why not just get an Elite? They come in the same lengths/rises, unless you have a 10 degree rise.

I didn't think I'd have to prequalify everything by stating my knowledge of the Thomson line of stems. I know the X4 does not come in 25.4.

In my mind shims are a compromise. If you want the X4 for its presumed improved clamp over the Elite, then get an O/S handlebar or a completely different 25.4 stem. There are many companies that make decent stems.

I know nothing about your stem.

Stem shims do work just fine though.

Hey santiago so sorry for being an ass up there earlier. While I was writing my wife had me in the damn hot seat about if I was going to ride or do some freaking repair work in the last hour of daylight we had, lol. So really I was frustrated with only her really. But I did ride and it was sweet too I must say. Anyway thanks for the "research" as I can always depend on u guys for answers. That is if I didnt **** that up too. I really want an X4 and if I have to buy 31.8 monkey bars I guess I will, just will be a while unfortunitly. Later.
