Giant Mountain Bike Sizing?
Am looking at getting a mountain bike and currently ride a Giant road bike (OCR.) However, the nearest Giant bike dealer is 100 miles away, so it's not simple to get there, etc.
Plus I'm really in the market for a used bike as there are some excellent deals on little-used bikes that have a lot of riding left in them.
Am wondering what guidelines are there for sizing a mountain bike? I plan on purchasing on eBay, so won't have a chance to fit one before purchasing... and yes, I am FULLY aware this is MY risk and many would consider it foolish.
I purchased the OCR this same way... and got an "XL" even though a "L" might have been equally or more appropriate. It doesn't bother me, cause I've put 2,000 miles per year on the OCR and it feels great... never get sore, so figure it must be pretty close.
I am 6'2", wear a 33" inseam jean, and when barefoot, there is 34.5" clearance to the floor.
I am not buying a mountain bike for severe riding, but for general off-pavement riding. Gravel roads, mud, snow, etc. I live in a rural agricultural community which is very flat... but in the fall/winter road riding is no good (on pavement) but the gravel roads are perfect: no traffic, high resistance riding at a slower speed. When it's cold out I want to minimize wind chill, so the slower, high resistance riding is perfect.
Am looking at #1 Giant; #2 Cannondale; #3 Specialized for bikes.
Focusing on the Giant (rainier/iguana and yukon/rincon platforms) what sizes would work? From some of the calculations, I think a 19" frame would be the smallest to go, even though it should work fine. 21" would be at the high end, but these are guesstimates. I'd like to know other people's opinions, their height and what size they use.
I just want good leg extension for riding and don't need it sized for jumps and rad riding.
Thank you,
Clinton
