Thats just my opinion though =)

Hydraulic is a bigger hassle and I believe they weigh more.

Isn't their more then just calipers + levers for a hydro system? I was under the impression it was more complicated then that and the simplicity of the mech's made them lighter etc;
?

With mechs you have cable, lever and caliper as well. Maintenance for either has been equal and really no big deal for me. Once the hayes are setup you never touch them. With mechs you have any of the problems associated with cable. Friction, stretch etc...
I found the mech system far more difficult and cumbersome than my current hydros. HOWEVER I had the hayes mechs which I consider to be well worth the 60$ american you pay for the SET. Meaning they are cheap and they suck.
As for weight I don't have a scale handy but picking up just the caliper in my hand and then picking up the entire hydro system in the same hand the mech caliper weighed AT LEAST double the entire hayes system. And this is coming from a guy whos ht weight almost 40 pounds. I care nothing for weight but the hayes hydros actually made my bike loose some Oh and as far as I know the hayes hydros are soem of the heaviest hyrdos currently available. But that is really hearsay as I don't track weights
