1985 Raleigh Elkhorn
This was the original mountain bike I bought in ’85 when the guy at the LBS talked me out of the BMX bike I wanted because I was over 6’ tall. My friends all thought it was funny looking but I laugh now since they all have mountain bikes as well! I rode this thing as a 7 speed commuter until I got my next bike. At which point this thing sat in storage or my garage for a decade until it was reborn last year as my ride with the family bike.

Stock except for the following:
- WTB saddle off the Zaskar
- Cane Creek lock on grips
- Wheelsmith rear rim laced to Shimano LX hub with Wheelsmith spokes
- Converted to single speed with Surly Singleator last year

The best first wedding anniversary gift ever if you ask me. The Spin rims and XTR cassette were my father’s day gift to me the next year. The last pieces I added were the new bars and seat post last year. As I work to finish getting it ready to play outside again I have realized that the rear brake might be beyond saving at this point. I hate to give up on it after only 10 years of use.

Stock Shimano XT 8 speed components with the following upgrades:

What can I say? I got the frame for a steal on fleabay. Sent it back to Moots for a factory refurbish and started building it up as money allowed. It’s pretty sad when all of your discretionary funds for 2008 are already spent and you are dipping into 2009’s money and it isn’t even May yet. Oh well. It is fun as can be and I am anxiously waiting to finish in time for the trails to deswamp and my wheel set to get here.

Do not be afraid of a Mojo. The thing is ridiculously over-engineered. Here's the stress tests the owner (yes, he answered my call personally) told me about:

1) Imagine a bar sticking vertically out of the ground. Mount the Ibis on that bar through the bottom bracket, so the frame is sideways. Then, let a 200 pound man stand on the head tube. It held.

2) Imagine that same Mojo. Mount another bar through the head tube, where a fork would be. Now, grab that bar at the point the front axle would usually be, and then press it straight towards the bottom bracket with 800 pounds of force. It held.

Over the past year and a half, I've beat the crap out of the bike... crashed hard enough to bruise ribs, dashed it against rock gardens, slammed it against the ground when I've gone over the bars, etc... and after all that it has one small cosmetic chip on the top tube. It's a beast. Don't fear the carbon.

ok- build is FINALLY complete... bloody nightmare, parts of it. Lynskey said they could make a custom frame for a 29'er but when it showed, the head tube was standard size... and too short for the adapter kits. local aerospace machining guru whipped up a part to save the day-

My Kona Hahanna is currently at the LBS, getting a tune-up. She's completely stock right now (after 2 years of commuting and some extremely occasional rec rides), but this year since buying a new bike for commuting, I wanted this one to be trail ready. I don't plan to do anything crazy, just getting out there and enjoying the sights . Mostly gravel and dirt trails, I imagine. (i.e. Bruce Trail, if anyone is familiar with my region).

Yah!! I spoke with Jamis today b/c I wanted to know why they don't build anything like it now. She said it's a shame b/c it's basically an XC/trail bike that is built to "go off some stuff". That gave me some comfort.

Bruce Trail can get pretty rough, but there are plenty of trails you should be perfect for.

I'm only familiar with a small portion of that trail up around Short Hills (?), and the other trails around here I've only ever run or hiked, so I have no idea what me and bike will be capable of. Next week I'm joining a bunch of co-workers on some kind of ride so hopefully I'll learn something.

its actually an 06 GED, notice the Hayes 9 Hydro disc? i converted it this last year before the next semester of school in winter. i stripped the entire frame and shot it with self etching primer and then a couple coats of undercoating material. turns out that the type i used was really crappy and scratches off with my nail even. so i put the tape there to prevent rocks and whatnot take all the coating off. didn't help much. I am afraid now to take it off because i don't want it to peel the crappy coating off! this summer i plan on stripping it all back down and having it powdercoated. that was my original plan but i was too cheap about it and now i'm paying the price of that mistake.
