hmm, I was wondering since we are in the topic of brakes, what if the terrain is a short steep - short flat - short steep - short flat - short steep - bumpy flat downhill? and what if its really muddy? is using your front brake is still the best option or rear better?

The thread was long derailed before Wheelhot asked a question. The OP asked about buying a bike and it evolved into braking technique.

Slightly more on-topic...
For the record, I have an '06 Stumpjumper Disc... and I think it's the shiznit. For a common-brand bike, it holds its own on the trails. I can whoop the pants off my friends (whether they're on HTs or FSs) speed-wise, and the machine has held up to everything I've thrown at it. If you can score a good deal on a Stumpy, I doubt you'd be disappointed.
The only thing I didn't do so well with was the chain. Mine came with the SRAM PC-971, and that chain was a problem from the first day; the LBS ultimately upgraded me (at no charge, the wonderful folks!) to a PC-991. The chain made a HUGE difference in shift feel, and it's been working fine with no stiff links or problems for several hundred miles.
Whatever you get, just enjoy it. And if you didn't like the Epic... well, I'll take it. If I get another MTB at any point, it would have to be a close battle between an S-Works Stumpjumper and the Epic.
