Which brake? Why?

Ok, all pricing aside (within LIMITS, folks!), which brake do I get my son for his new build?
Formula Oro k24 or Puro
Magura Louise BAT Carbon
Magura Marta SL

His build: Salsa Moto Rapido (HT), lefty carbon DLR2 fork, control tech bar, stem, Sram XO drive train - other bits & pieces.

This is an XC race bike.

Which one does he want? I mean, we all know you're a cool mom and all ap, but I would never want anyone to pick out bike components on my behalf.

He would be happy with any of these -now it's up to 'shopper mom' to get the best value for the price.

Oro K24's are a bit on the pricey side.

I'd probably go and locate either the Magura MartaSL's or juicy 7's.

lowcel usually recommends the plain Marta's over the SLs for weight : price reasons

am i to assume you guys don't like any of the new Hopes since it was not listed?

I'm finding that the formula k 24's are priced @ $400, the SL's @ $580, and the BAT Carbons @ $500.

The Hope brakes I looked at seem to be more FR or DH than XC -

Have you checked on prices for the regular Marta's? I like them just as well as my SL's and they are only a few grams heavier. They aren't quite as purdy though.

Lowcel, you know appearance is almost important to some people as function.... and this holds especially true for this kid!! (BTW, he's 15 today!)

A little off topic, but are you putting a lefty on a salsa frame?

he's putting a lefty on a Salsa frame. Bought a Project 3-2-1 adapter for the carbon DLR2, and according to all the specs, it should fit. We're still waiting for the arrival of the frame...

I thought the Hope Mono Mini were XC-specific. Each set (calipers, pads, lines, levers, etc.) weigh 375g.

Jenson has them (non-floating rotor) at $160 per end. Not too shabby. I'd probably opt for the floating rotors which adds about $50 I think.

I like Magura, I am running the Louise as a back brake right now. It works very nice.

Hmm, from the list you given, I say I have to choose Magura Marta's SL, and I agree with LowCel about Magura Marta (if you want it cheaper). Other brands that I will look for a XC disc brakes are the Avid Juicy 7 Carbon/Ultimate, Hope Mono Mini

I believe you need a 31 year old that wants to go to all of the same races as you.

Lowcel, I have some weirdo neighbors we don't particularly care for with 25 acres & an almost finished house. They overpaid ($50,000), but then, they did build a house. Still no plumbing, as far as I know. Maybe you could make them an offer, and I wouldn't have to adopt you & give you chores. You'd just be there, on the way, a travelling biking fool like the rest of us.

(Oh, and did ya hear? Dr. Steve is WVMBA's new Pres.)

If it wasn't so far of a commute to get to my office I would consider it. The area you live in is beautiful (at least the country I go through to get to the race).

I hadn't heard that Dr. Steve was the new pres, pretty cool. Any more updates on the schedule. Probably a stupid question since if there was you would have posted them in the WVMBA thread.

Anywho, did "the kid" have a good birthday? Can I still call him "the kid" now that he is getting older? He is the same age Josh was last year, can we expect him to be as fast or faster than he was? If faster I'll be watching him pass me this year too.

He will always be "the kid".... even if he's 6 feet tall before he hits that 16 year old growth spurt... His unwanted girlfriend (a 5 year old from further down the road) sent him a 'work of art', along with a message that she expects to see it on his bulletin board next time she visits, and I guess I agreed to buy him brakes. He's happy.

Once you get to know the roads, it's 75 minutes to Charleston from here (barring hay trucks, log trucks, and tractors on RT 16). But the taxes are CHEAP.... my land tax (on 135 acres) is $139/yr. Of course, you have to have 4wd or awd to get to a paved road, but, hey, you know those folks at the highway department, right?

no offensive, but you can find great brakes at a much cheaper price, but like in school, you have to do your homework! I have hope minis and love them, but I wouldnt hesitate to put Avid juicy 7's or marta SL's on! Hopes and Formulas have my vote for bling-bling though!
