https://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...+Crankset.aspx

OR

https://wheelworld.com/itemdetails.cf...gId=39&id=2475

Bikes: Bike Count: Rising.

The external one. The 2nd one uses a normal octalink bb, which is internal, it's good, but internal bottom brackets tend to not last as long as an external.

An external is a stiffer set up with a bottom bracket where the bearings are on the outside, which allows for larger bearings which means longer lasting.

The first one is the more recent Hollowtech II design that has an integrated spindle and outboard bearings. The second one is an older LX design using the original Hollowtech design. I don't know or think that the second one has an integrated spindle and may need a bottom bracket along with the crankset. Using the same Wheel World site I see that the BB for the LX is about $37 bridging the gap between the two. https://wheelworld.com/itemdetails.cf...gId=39&id=2449

I'd opt for the first one but that's just me.

EDIT:
Here you go, the LX like the first one above but at $150.00. I think if you look in the coupon forum you can even get a Nashbar coupon from time to time.

And look for my "Neophyte's guide to crankset installation" so that you can do it yourself.

The Shimano system is much better than the Race Face version. Installation is way easier with the shimano external.

Look above to one of my previous posts. That same LX crankset at Nashbar is $150. Throw in the discount code that works best in your favour and you have a nice crank at a good price.

Quality would be the big difference...alivio is meant for casual riding on low end cruisers. LX is a built for the trails.
