Time ATAC vs. Time Z

I've been running Time ATACs on my mountain bike since 1998. I'm getting a new mountain bike, and I see that Time has a relatively new pedal called the "Time Z'. I'm debating whether to get the ATACs or the Time Zs. The supposed advantage to the Zs is that they offer better support due to their larger size, and you can pedal a bit without being clipped in.

Does anyone have any experiece with both???

ThanX!!!!

no but the Z is intended for freeriders and downhillers. What kind of riding do you do?
People with XC race shoes tend to have problems engagingthe Z's

I'm currently running a Klein Attitude hardtail, but I'm getting a Blur. While the Blur is certainly not a freeride bike, but it's closer to that category than what I ride now.

I'm still confused, but that usually doesn't take much!

I got the Zs. I can easily pedal with casual shoes as well as with cycling shoes uncliped. The pedals are nukeproof. I usually forget my crankarm at low position over rocks and i slam the pedals to rocks... just minor scratches to them...by far the strongest thing in bicycle componentry imho.

if you use the toe studs in your cycling hsoes you won't be able to engage the pedal. thats the only gripe i have with them
Other than that they are perfect.

I use the ATACs... good pedals, but I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner.

Actually yesterday I was tired and returning to the trailhead when I couldn't get unclipped as I was stopping, lost balance, and fell. My face came literally inches away from a barbed wire fence.. I got lucky.

I think I may be picking up a set of the ATAC Zs in the near future. Will common, cleated shoes have a problem or just the ones with extra toe studs?

I use the Time Z control's with SIDI Bullet's. Great combo, great pedals. Although I don't use toe studs, it looks like they would work. Might be a matter of shoe size, mine are 47's.

Cyber.... what size shoe do you wear? A 12.5? Is the SIDI a true 12.5? I'm thinking about ordering some, but I don't want to go through all the hassle of ordering it and having it not fit.

Most all my shoes and boots are size 12. I have one pair of Tony Hawks that size 13. I have 2 pair of Italian made dress shoes that are 12 1/2. As for my SIDI's, I would guess a 47 is more like a 12 1/4. A 46 seemed just a tad tight to me. Maybe cause there so stiff.

To me shoes are more personal than underware. I always try shoes on first.

btw. I lived in Titusville, Florida from 1966-1981.

Bikes: Lots

Titusville, Cool town, spent a lot of weekends there back in my Windsurfing days. Used to go to a regatta there every year!
